CDV is better than any internet-dependent VoIP service. No QOS needed to work, or cutting into my internet. HSI and voice are seperate albeit on the same wire.
Power outages are another biggie. Few people have a UPS connected to their equipment. CDV has a battery built in and will run for hours. CDV will do dialup(yeah dialup!). Internet can die and CDV will still work. CDV will do FAX. CDV will do alarm systems. CDV will do 911 and actually tell them where you live.
I've had CDV for quite some time, just recently did I opt for the FREE HD promo - over all, even after the promo is over, my bill will be less that what it was/has been.

Yes, Comcast treats my voice packets with less care than their own but I've not found it to be a problem in the 4 years that I've been using VoIP.

Internet was not required for AT&T Digital, CDP and even now with CDV. I've only had Comcast HSI for 5 1/2 years - been digital for ages.

I had Vonage for 3 years, with Comcast CHSI, and never had any issues.

| Ok enough garbage...
>CDV has a battery built in and will run for hours.
3-4 hours of talk time if your lucky, 8 hours standby time blah blah. Will do you No good if the node in your area is not powered by a backup generator. You will not have a phone until the guy with the cable truck plugs the generator into the box on the pole.
>CDV will do dialup(yeah dialup!). Will not work with a lot of dialup modems etc. If you get arrested and have to go on a teather, many courts are making people get a pots line because their equipmnt will not work with CDV. God forbid your CDV go out and your machine does not report where you are in time. A lot of other dial up equipment has a hard time with CDV.
>CDV will do FAX. Yeah at 9600 baud or slower. More like your sending a fax overseas.
>CDV will do alarm systems. Alarm companies hate CDV. Your better off switching your alarm over to a cell phone type connection then thru CDV. Comcast upgrading between 12am-6am, don't think your alarm is going to work when your internet and phone is down when you need it most. Really sucks when you have to use a cell phone or neighbors POTS phone when there is an emergency. Your paying for what for the phone?
>CDV will do 911 and actually tell them where you live.
So does my MagicJack and I save over $400 a year not using Comcast sub standard so called phone service.

Someone's actually comparing garbage Magicjack service to Comcast CDV? Now that's good for a chuckle(!) Isn't that like comparing a Yugo to a Ferrari?

IMO, if you look at the economics of MJ, you quickly realize that it's essentially a big Ponzi scheme. When the number of new subscribers starts tailing off, the business has to collapse.

| So in other words, just as useless has a POTS line. People will get tired of wasting money on a digital equivalent of a POTS line seeing that most people have cell phones. It's a tough economy, and a home line will be the first to get cut.
I don't need QoS for my VOIP to work perfectly. I'm not on a lousy cable provider that shapes traffic b/c their network can't handle the load. Their lousy service is one of the main reasons I switched to fiber.

CDV is on a seperate channel so shaping is irrelevent.
No, way better than POTS! All the perks without all the charges. Not metered either. I don't have copper(POTS) connected to this house. F*** SBC/AT&T!
BTW, I have two cellphones... still like a house phone. Cells drop sometimes.
YMMV! -- Think outside the Fox... Opera

CDV and HSI are on the same channels. Your HSI takes a back seat to CDV traffic.
Unless something changed since I worked there. I was there for the CDV launch in one of the earliest markets.

Honestly, look at the cell phone companies. They're digital too. Are they still phones?
