All of it should be spent on providing access to the portions of the country which have no access to broadband now.

Agreed. Rural Americans with DOCSIS 2 or even 1.1 don't need DOCSIS 3. Rural Americans with dial-up could use some "last-gen" DSL. How about all the funds go directly into wiring the have-nots and we'll worry about the latest gen technology later.

Given the nature of politics, that outcome is very unlikely. The money will be funneled in a way that it covers the most VOTERS. And sending the money to areas with few voters will not get the backing of the pols in Congress.

So expect the funds to be spent in cities and suburbs - the places that gave the Dems their majority in the House & Senate.

Given the nature of politics ...
We shall see. I believe if the money were to be spent providing access to dead zones in Rural America, most American Voters, would view this as a big plus, and as a real Change. We MAY be living in a new paradigm. The November elections would seem to indicate that is the case.

I think a lot of political capital would be earned if the Administration took a different tact, broke with the past, and actually put need ahead of partisan politics. Wouldn't that be refreshing?

I live in a big city, and would certainly give kudos to Obama, if he channeled that money where the greatest need was instead of here, where we are already swimming in Internet access. In fact, if he did anything other than this, he would lose as far as I am concerned. Let's see what happens, we may be pleasantly surprised.

There are only a couple of "voters" congress is interested in: ATT, Comcast, Verizon and a few more.

Unfortunately, I believe these "voters" will have the most say in how the money gets spent and where service is deployed. Whatever these "voters" end up doing, it won't result in lower prices, faster speeds or better coverage of underserved and rural areas.

Cynical? yes, but you get the congress you voted for, not the congress you wish you had.

I agree, I would love to have 1.5m right now. Yes I would like 20m more, but They have to start somewhere. Since I am about 12mi from cable and 6 from DSL I will get wired highspeed soon-ish. I AM paying for them to upgrade the internet so I SHOULD get it. I know a LOT of people who have higher speeds want more, but we don't have wired highspeed(we have wireless 512/128) and I feel do to the fact we ARE paying we should get something.

Forget it...the people of rural bark about the fact that they don't have the broadband that urban America does. Too bad!
They also don't have the 2 hour daily commutes, or potholes that will break an axle upon impact, or a crime rates that are through the roof. You can have my broadband if you take these other "luxuries"!

I am not whining just saying, if they want my money they need to give me something.

"They also don't have the 2 hour daily commutes, or potholes that will break an axle upon impact, or a crime rates that are through the roof." ok you got me on the commute its only 1hr here, BUT our road is 25% pot holes BIG ones both in depth and diameter. We don't have many burglaries, but a teacher @ the local highschool got taken away for a pervert crime last week. and every summer 28-ish% of the mailboxes are bashed in with a bat or pipe bombed. and a few yrs ago there was a kid who killed his dad, and a body found in a pool.

A few years ago huh...
Chicago Murder rate
Homicides 1990-2008
1990: 851
1991: 927
1992: 943
1993: 931
1994: 929
1995: 827
1996: 789
1997: 759
1998: 704
1999: 641
2000: 628
2001: 666
2002: 647
2003: 598
2004: 448
2005: 449
2006: 467
2007: 442
2008: 510
Now I know your probably thinking, "well why don't you just move if don't like the violence" to which I would reply, "why don't you just move if you can't get broadband!"

I can't move I still a kid. And I'm not asking for like 20m I would be happy with 1.5m. And for half of my life I live in KC there were quite a few murders there. And I do have wireless broadband, it just cost a lot. Its not so much that I don't have access to faster speeds it that they r taking my money and not giving my anything, and I don't like socialism, so I do not want them to spend your money for something for me, but I do not have a problem with them spending my money on me. I would get my neighbors to pay(my family would for the whatever it is that gets us higher speed and we would cause we all want higher speed. Hopefully we will get it soon as we live in the middle of comcast and embarq, so which ever one gets here first gets the money.

They don't have to take those other luxaries just because they want broadband too. Why don't you stop crying and being selfish for a change. I'd love for the rural areas to get some good choices for broadband other than satelite and wireless cards. The internet was also designed to connect people in all parts of the world. That goes for those who live in the rural areas as well.

Selfish huh...Whom do you think is going to pay for this rural deployment. The subscriber that doesn't live in boofoo Egypt. Once again non-suspecting people will be forced to pay for where other people have chosen to live.

Do you give all of your money away?
If not, then why not?
Maybe your selfish too!

Stop bitching. If you don't like how your taxes are being used your more than welcome to leave the country.

Is that the best retort that Tennessee's finest can come up with?
"Leave the Country if you don't like the tax policy?"
Just how long did you ponder this prophetic declaration. Was this thought the result of survey using stringent sampling methods, or were you the visionary that came up with this all on his own. Was this given to you by Ms. Cleo, or were you enlightened with this opinion while brushing your tooth.

Re: Connect America

Quick point, but that Chicago murder rate is approximately 5 per 100,000/year.
That is equivalent to less than 1 murder every 4 years in a town the size of Pleasant Hill. me1212 might actually live in a town with a higher murder rate than Chicago.
