3 HD Streams and lower HD compression coming soon

I got off of the phone this morning with a representative from the Tier-2 department and she told me that they will be offering 3 HD streams and lower compression on those streams sometime this summer.

She also told me that it will only be offered to people who are capable of getting that service. For example, people who are closer to the box. Which tells me that they have plans to up the sync-rate of the gateway to handle those changes.

How does the HD look? How do I get it ahead of everyone else?

I'm very intrigued by this "lower compression". By my calculations, they can go 3HD/1SD and add about 1mbps per stream while leaving 10mbps dedicated to internet as they do currently.

Using the DVR storage hours as a rough HD to SD ratio, it works out like this. Currently:

HD = 5.7mbps, SD = 1.8mbps.
2HD + 2SD = 15mbps.
15mbps + 10mbps internet = 25mbps profile.

HD = 6.73mbps, SD = 1.8mbps.
3HD + 1SD = 22mbps
22mbps + 10mbps internet = 32mbps profile.

That would mean they'd need to maintain two different encodings of each HD stream though (one for lower profile customers and another for "lower compression" people). That's a lot of extra data to backhaul around!

Sounds nice but I doubt AT&T would qualify me. My max rate seems like it should handle it at 47mbps, but I'd probably be DQ'd due to far distance.

I believe in another thread somewhere he said he was in the trial version for 3hd streams. I would like to know what his synch rate is though.

One of the reasons I dropped Uverse and went back to Directv was the 2 HD limit. 3 is a good start, but I won't be coming back until they can support 4. I realize a lot of people are to far away to ever get 4, but I'm about 400' from the VRAD and am capable of syncing at around 88Mb. So hopefully someday AT&T will offer a 50Mb sync for those of use close enough to use it.

So the same guy that got me on this 'trial service' called me today to ask how things are. I took this time to get more details. I guess this is something currently offered to only employees at this time to qualify, though, I guess he had noticed my complaints about HD quality, and since I qualified, figured to see if I would be interested to try what is coming. I few things that we discussed.

You must be able to maintain atleast a 32mbps minimum. Your Max Sync rate really has nothing to do with this. Max sync just means some data happened to get transferred at that rate. Not that it can handle that rate as a stable connection transferring a lot of data. With that being said, your profile attempts to 'adapt' to the highest sustainable connection it can for max throughput bandwidth for both TV/Internet, but 32mbps is the bare minimum you must be able to sustain. This would explain my internet being anywhere from 10mbps - 30mbps depending on what im doing.

HD quality is definitely great IMO. This was my original biggest complaint. SD was fine, but sometimes HD looked worse than HD with the pixelation and artifacts due to compression. I guess thats what this updated profile/tier attempts to do, is maximize the bandwidth utilization for those who qualify.

What's this about being able to go from 10 Mbps to 30 Mbps depending upon what you are doing? I thought you are locked in at the speed tier you paid for and the gateway caps you.

How would I determine if my line can handle this higher tier?

Yes more info please. Is this something those that qualify will automatically get?

Any info on a contact, for, say, a qualifying employee who might be interested?

I'd be interested as a trial if its only for employees for now.
