2 edits | Speed Disparity Running Vista Home premium. Modem is a Westel 2200 Service is Verizon DSL 1mb/384. I have a netgear WGR614 V7 between the Westel and my computer. Mainly for 802.11 WIFI access for my laptop and iPhone.
Logging into the westel, "Connection Overview" says "DSL Connect Rate (Down/Up) 1024 KBits/Sec by 448 KBits/Sec". Actually a bit better than the advertised speed.
A speed test to a NY ISP (the closest to me) shows:

Line Quality" looks like this. Perhaps the lossy VZ routers are the trouble?
The disparity in the speed seems pretty great. Given that one never gets the advertised speeds, It seems that I am getting pretty much what I am paying for 19.99/month dry-loop service; especially if one takes the westel numbers at face value.
I was just wondering what accounts for the speed difference between what the westel sees, and what a speed test reports.
EDIT: Tweek test shows all OK

tubbynetreminds me of the danse russePremium,MVM join:2008-01-16 Chandler, AZ | *most* dsl implementations have a connection overhead. your modem is provisioned for a certain speed, but you will only receive 80-85% of this speed. with these parameters, your speed is in spec.

1 edit | reply to TamaraB Assuming your connection is TCP/IP using PPPoE over ATM overhead is 14.4%
1024 x 84.4% = 864 kbps and 448 x 84.4% = 378 kbps.
If my assumptions are correct speed test result is right on. If not I posted numbers for other types of connections: »www.tschmidt.com/writings/Broadb···24054230

| Thanks Guys!
So, the overhead is in the Westel, as it negotiates the PPPOE connection then. The 1024 kbps that the westel is clocking is "raw" before the overhead is stripped.
Got it. Then it looks like I am getting about all I can out of this connection.
Thanks!
