U.S. Cellular

It don't really surprise me to here about another regional cellular carrier on the market for sale. They do cover a lot of holes between some of the major carriers out in the urban parts of the country. Even with the aconomy in the dumps someone will gobble them up in a heartbeat.

Maine is one of the states they have a presence in....there coverage isnt horrible as I roam on them sometimes with Sprint...they actually just put up a bunch of new towers in the state. I'd love to see Sprint buy them.

US Cellular has fantastic coverage here in Maine.

IF----- Verizon buys them. Verizon already bought and converted Unicels GSM which covered allot of US Cellular area. Thus, just about all US Cellular areas would be redundant.

So, who else would buy them?

ATT? But they would have to convert to GSM... (Which I wouldn't mind)

it's either going to be Sprint or Verizon. I'm not sure Verizon could get approval though.

Why only Sprint or Verizon?

Verizon bought a GSM system and converted it to CDMA. Why can't ATT buy US Cellular's CDMA and convert it to GSM?

It would be the only GSM here now.
ATT currently covers only the southern half of the state. North, you roam onto Unicel (Verizon keeps the GSM going for roaming)

Everything in the press releases and such had Verizon saying they were also going to hold onto the GSM equipment on the towers just so they could make roaming revenue off of it. I wish I knew if this was the case.

I can vouge that it is true.

I have a Verizon phone that suddenly went to full bars (from barely usable) when they converted Unicel.
BUT! I also have an ATT iPhone that roams onto Unicel (Verizon) and still does.

ATT would have to be bothered enough to do something that involves brains.

If you remember, this is the same company that built a fios to the node system and used 1.5 million boxes to send it to house, and will one day HAVE to wire fiber to houses, wasting 1.5 million per box.

They cover Northern California very well too, in fact, in the counties they cover (Mendocino (my county), Lake, Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity, Siskiyou, Modoc, Lassen, Plumas) they are the coverage leader. They still don't have EVDO up here yet, while Verizon has the entire North State covered in EVDO. USCC also has a huge presence in Oregon and Washington, and has great coverage there as well.

There coverage in western Maryland and West Virginia is also excellent. Of course a lot of people dont realize that U.S. Cellular had used USF money over the years to bring wireless service to remote parts of West Virginia were no one would ever bother covering. As far as EV-DO they have been really tight liped about that, never even shows it on there web site.

Ive had USC for some time now, switched from ATT and have loved them. Free incoming calls is amazing - saves me so many minutes. True their data network is still quite slow, Chicago only just got EVDO and down at school I only get 1X, I do not use data too much so thats not a major factor for me (easyEDGE isnt the best methods either).

I would worry if they got gobbled up by a bigger company, things would just go down the drain - as many acquisitions tend to go.

because they won't do it. at&t is too busy and financially tied down trying to get U-verse out everywhere. And as soon as they get u-verse out everywhere they'll realize they just should have done FTTH in the first place and start doing that.

AT&T will never have it everywhere, they don't even have DSL everywhere (my home of Redwood Valley being one), and they've had well over 10 years to get it out.

My point is that at&t is not buying US Cellular

Verizon already pissed me off by buying Alltel. I don't think they need to get any bigger.

How about this, let Verizon buy *ALL* of the existing CDMA providers and let the monopolize the technology.

I'm sick of stockholders and the companies' board of directors always taking the easy and most profitable way out. They have no clue what real damage they're causing to competition.

Eventually we'll have 2 Cell Companies, one for CDMA and one for GSM. Then they'll charge whatever price they want and we can't do a damn thing about it.

Ya. I'm worried where my unlimited data plan is going to go if Alltel is grabbed by another company here.

I can't do 5GB caps in my profession. I use that in a week.

I was with US Cellular before I switched to ATT and then eventually Sprint. Coverage was great at the time in downeast and BSP areas.

IMHO US Cellular doesn't bring much value to Verizon Wireless. What value would they bring to Sprint and where would Sprint get the money to buy them?

Additional coverage to rural areas. I can't speak for other states, but for Maine, US Cellular has great coverage "out in the sticks". I would frequently roam on them when I went out to Western Maine. Once you get up into Central/Northern Maine..I don't think Sprint has much, if any, of there own network...this would at least give them that...I assume the same situation holds true in other parts of the US where US Cellular operates.

As far as the money to buy them...who knows...big companies tend to have ways to pull money out of orifices that little guys like us only wished of having.

Wouldn't this be an excellent opportunity for Comcast to get into the cell market?
