Verizon bought a GSM system and converted it to CDMA. Why can't ATT buy US Cellular's CDMA and convert it to GSM?
Everything in the press releases and such had Verizon saying they were also going to hold onto the GSM equipment on the towers just so they could make roaming revenue off of it. I wish I knew if this was the case.
I can vouge that it is true.
I have a Verizon phone that suddenly went to full bars (from barely usable) when they converted Unicel. BUT! I also have an ATT iPhone that roams onto Unicel (Verizon) and still does. -- "I'm just a goof, looking for my ball."
