I can't speak for other states, but for Maine, US Cellular has great coverage "out in the sticks". I would frequently roam on them when I went out to Western Maine. Once you get up into Central/Northern Maine..I don't think Sprint has much, if any, of there own network...this would at least give them that...I assume the same situation holds true in other parts of the US where US Cellular operates.
As far as the money to buy them...who knows...big companies tend to have ways to pull money out of orifices that little guys like us only wished of having.
