I can connect to other speakeasy customers but can't get out onto the Internet through the NYC POP.

1 edit | Re: Speakeasy down nationwide I have one more Speakeasy DSL to get rid off and that will be it...no more Speakeasy.
These guys are at the pubs enjoying St. Patty's day while no one is monitoring the network.
But on a more serious note...these guys are going down faster than hooker on a john.

@comcast.net | All 3 of my speakeasy accounts are down. This has become a habit with them over the past year. I think its finally time I gave up on them. Time to go back to SBC.

This outage will cause me to lose clients i sang the speakeasy praise to. The changes started well before the Best Buy purchase. They started when Mike Apgar left and Chatterly came in. They wasted a bunch of money on WiMax, floated the idea of getting rid of DBMs, dropped support here, and started moving away from resi service.

| I can't find a client with their service who isn't down right now: This is a major outage. I got an auto-notification in email about the outage, but it only went to my clients who have their VoIP service.
For what it's worth, I've had clients with them for almost a decade and I don't remember them ever having an outage like this before. @Home/ATTBI/Comcast is another story...

Literally been 8 years since I had an outage that was not maintenance related for longer than 1 hour. Better than TWC for sure and better than most ISP's/providers.

| I'm generally OK with speakeasy. I have two circuits I manage for work.
Was in the middle of a vnc session to a server at work when it dropped and no packets tracerouted beyond their peering partners. Kept getting choked up at speakeasy.whatever.above.net and speakeasy.whatever.level3.net.
The CSR wouldn't believe me at first that it seemed that they were having some sort of peering-route poisoning-infrastructure problem since HE could connect to my circuits from inside the speakeasy network.
Figures.
I had to produce several traceroutes from boxes around the world I have accounts on before he would take me seriously. Put me on hold for a minute then came back with "uhh yeah, you seem to be correct..."
heh. | |

Put me on hold for a minute then came back with "uhh yeah, you seem to be correct..." I've run into this in the past too. Level 1 support doesn't appear to be equipped to look at network connectivity issues. I would probably have asked the CSR to forward the ticket directly to the NOC, which is what I do when a flaky peer or circuit is dropping lots of my packets.
Anyway, Boston got reconnected after about 2-1/2 hours, as the stream of inbound spam resumed at 23:02.

| It does seem like a routing issue. This Level3 device is reachable and pingable both from within the Speakeasy network and also from the outside. A traceroute to an inside address stops here.

An outage for a couple of hours is understandable, but six and counting is ridiculous.

| In our case we had a day of increasing slowness. CSR's didn't believe it was on speakeasy end. Around 8:30pm everything vanished. We weren't back up until close to 1:30am. Shocked at such an extended downtime in this day and age from a provider like speakeasy. We will begin immediately re-evaluating our relationship with them as this simply can't happen again. Still waiting for some sort of e-mail from them explaining what exactly happened. | |

Still waiting for some sort of e-mail from them explaining what exactly happened. Don't hold your breath. But with a nationwide outage like this, one possible explanation immediately comes to mind: Speakeasy failed to pay their bills.

| This 'nationwide' outage has not hit my house. I have been on a business trip and my wife is at home and I would 100% hear it from her if it was done and what she needed to do to get it back.
So - in short - no 'nationwide' shortage and yes - they seem to be paying the bills and our connection is still - rock solid stable... As before. -- Brian

| Re: Speakeasy down nationwide I'm glad your service didn't go down, but Speakeasy themselves used the word "Nationwide"--I wasn't exaggerating. Here's the report from the system status page:
(03/17/09 05:25:18 PM) SOLVED: Nationwide Connectivity Issue Region : All E.T.A. : (none) Services Affected : Voice and data services Speakeasy is aware of a network issue affecting connectivity nation wide. We are investigating this issue and appreciate your patience.
Update: 03/17/09 06:46:25 PM We are still experiencing issues in the NYC area. All other locations are believed to be up and passing traffic as usual.

| Just today I made the switch from SBC/AT&T after years of crappy service to SpeakEasy. After the technician setup my service he noticed that traceroutes failed to major sites like google & yahoo. Speakeasy.net loads up, msn loads up & a handfull of other sites. Besides that, I can't ping or surf the majority of what I need to. Up & Down speeds are terrible.
So this is my first day with speakeasy & not too happy...
I called up their tech support & was notified that they are having problems in my area. Official report:
03/20/09 12:03:30 PM Throughput and Packetloss issues in San Francisco area Region : San Francisco E.T.A. : (none) Services Affected : Voice and data services Some customers in the San Francisco area may experience slow throughput or packet loss issues. Our vendor is investigating this issue and hope to have it resolved soon. At this time we do not have an estimated time of repair.
It's been like this for over 12 hours now. Status of problem & ETA for fix have not changed..... how frustrating!
Good thing I still have my old DSL line active or i'd be dead in the water.

@comcast.net | Service still down and it has been four days in the SF Bay Area. Tech support has been giving me lip service and I do not think they have a clue what is going on. Anyone has better luck?

 Frustrated in DC
@speakeasy.net
| We first reported problems with our nearly brand new 8M/1M (down/up) ADSL2+ and voice service on Monday, March 16th. Essentially, our throughput speeds are pathetic, about 2M/90kbps (that's right, our upload speed is only 90kpbs!!). Of course, now that we have Speakeasy for both our data and voice using their VoIP services, and since we have 5 people in our location, we essentially can't upload nor use our phones, since people can't hear us when we talk.
Over the past 7 days, we've spent many hours undoing and redoing our network, and I've heard more possible explanations than I care to report here. Unfortunately, even after they told me that the were sending a tech to the CO to repair something (of course, they need two days to send someone out), I came in this morning to see that nothing has changed.
So, now we have a business, brand new to Speakeasy, that has essentially minimal internet and zero phone service.
What will happen next, I'm not sure....I still haven't heard from Speakeasy as to why their "fix" didn't "fix" anything.
Oh, and supposedly large chunks of DC are seeing this same situation. Anyone else dealing with this too?

| Re: Speakeasy down nationwide exactly the same boat. I've been down for 7 days now, and am ready to ditch them for comcast.
The csr i spoke to was willing to credit me for 7 days of outage, but that's all he can do. They want $300 for canceling, as I've just moved ( even though i've been their customer for 10+ years )
what kind of customer service is that? do they really think demanding $300 is going to make me a happy, loyal customer? why do i have to call in and complain before i get a measly 7 day credit?

| I only noticed the issue one day last week, I think Thursday, and I saw a bit of packet loss for maybe a couple of hours and then it went down mid-evening. Downtime was about 20 minutes. I called support and got the prerecorded message, so I did not continue to a CSR since I got the message they know of the issue. About 20 minutes later, connectivity came back up with good speed and no packet loss. It's been that way since.
I'm a Netshare admin so I'll continue with SE as my own personal experience is not too bad. One 20 minute downtime over several years is not bad. There are, er, *other* common broadband providers that have 20 minutes downtime several times a week.

@conversent.net | We're down again in NYC, but it is unrelated I believe. Asked the CSR what happened last week, said a line card went down in one of thier Junipers because 'someone was doing something they should not have been'.
