Wireless access

My dad has 6.0 service. When I go to visit, for some reason I can not connect to his 2wire router. I have tried every access code he has and still can not connect. Let me re-phrase- I can connect, but get a 169 ip, which I know is windows default.

I can connect wireless here at home fine, and other places, so I know it isn't my laptop. I've read that when you initially connect to this router it scrambles the code so the original doesn't work.

Can someone help me out here? I connected fine to his old Linksys router when he had 3.0.

The connection on the WAN side of the router has nothing to do with your not being able to connect to the LAN side of the router.

Either your father does not have his router's radio enabled, or he has not given you the correct WEP/WAP passphrase to allow access. Another possibility is that your father has enabled MAC address filtering, and your notebook's MAC address is not on the list.

Can you see his router's SSID if you browse for wireless connections? Have you tried to connect using an Ethernet cable?

Radio enabled- I am unfamiliar with this. If it is one button for all the computers on the network, then it is on, since he connects to wireless just fine. If it is for each individual computer on the network, that could be the problem. I need to check that next time.

I could always see his SSID, and can connect with cat 5. Last time I was there a few days I had to run a 25 foot cat 5 cable out the window and down to my laptop to connect. I will have to check MAC filtering. That could also be the problem. I've forgotten a few things since I did ADSL support for BS about 10 years ago. Then again, a lot has changed since then as well.

If your father can make a wireless connection and you can see the SSID, then the radio on his router is enabled.

If you can connect via a cat5 cable, then most likely his router is not doing MAC filtering, but I don't have a 2wire router on hand at the moment to check if it can selectively filter only wireless connections. Perhaps someone in the DSLR »2Wire forum can answer that question.

My money is on the possibility that he has forgotten his WEP/WAP passphrase and has supplied you with a bogus passphrase. His connection still works because it has the correct security authentication. I can't tell you how many service calls I have made because of a forgotten passphrase which the user insists is the same passphrase that has always been used. Along that same line, it may be possible that your wireless NIC is not compatible with the wireless security mode being used on your father's 2wire router.

I can imagine. Everyone always "is sure" their passphrase is right. Used to hear that with 56k support. I thought about the possibility of my NIC not being compatible, but since I'm using the standard NIC that comes with Toshiba Satellite, I keep going back to passphrase.

I have another wireless card I can try next time to rule it out. I wish there was a way he could find out for sure without having to call support. Not meaning to offend those reading this, but after a few bad experiences he has little faith in calling India support.

I appreciate your help on this, NetFixer. I will repost in 2wire forum to see what can be done to figure this out.
