FINALLY

As usual, Apple has a great device but is late to the party with basic functionality. While I am satisfied with my iPhone, there are some glaring functionality issues which it looks like 3.0 might finally address; MMS and the ability to use the keyboard in landscape mode other than just for the web.

It was funny; as I was following along with the presentation yesterday, it occurred to me how the stuff I was most happy to see was stuff that just about every other smartphone has had since revision 1.

Not that I won't eagerly upgrade to OS 3.0, but on my first-gen iPhone there will be no MMS or stereo Bluetooth support as the necessary hardware supposedly isn't present (A2DP was a HUGE one for me; on a music-centric device like the iPhone it boggled my mind that they left it out).

I'm waiting for the third hardware revision to drop and hoping it will be this summer. Then I'll be upgrading and giving the first-gen iPhone to my wife.

I agree with everything you said. While stereo bluetooth hasn't (yet) been a big deal to me, I can see why that would be big to some. Aside from that, every smartphone/pda I've owned (since WinMo 5) has had all the features 3.0 is just now bringing to the table. I still can't grasp why MMS of all things (every single phone except the iPhone supports it) wasn't introduced until now.

Any idea what the new hardware revision will bring? Hopefully a faster processor because let's face it, all that pretty graphical "gee-whiz" sliding and fading is no good if it stutters when doing it.

Also, I wonder if we'll finally be able to add a wallpaper to the springboard? I hate how I can't do simple ass things like that.

I've played around with the iPhone. I messed with it back when the 2nd update came out for the iPhone, and to be honest, my impression was...well I wasn't really that impressed. Granted, I don't use smart phones often, because I don't have a use for them (but others do, which I understand; not bashing the iPhone or any other smart phone out there.)

I've been reading up on the iPhone, and the updates in general (not a REAL close reading), and maybe I'm missing something, but the hype of the iPhone was a bit over the top.
I know someone who purchased it the night the phones came out, and played around with it. It just seemed...like a shiny piece of overhyped technology.

I could be wrong, but that was my impression of the iPhone.

I have stereo bluetooth headphones that I use at the gym via a dongle that plugs into the dock connector, I look forward to the power-savings of using the built-in bluetooth adapter rather than a separate dongle.

My XV6700 running WinMo 5 most certainly did. It came out at the end of the WinMo 5 cycle though and later on I actually hacked WinMo 6 onto it, so perhaps when WinMo 5 was released it didn't? Your Moto Q also ran Windows Mobile Smartphone Edition ... the XV6700 ran the full Windows Mobile. There is a BIG difference.

Regardless, my buddies Moto Q does and I had a Moto Q9c that did as well. Both are on Verizon though.

It has without a doubt been overhyped. It is (in my opinion) probably the best phone that I've ever owned now that it has Exchange support (and I can install/use a SIP client over 3G to log into our work PBX) -- but there are definitely areas for improvement and regardless of what people say, surfing the web on it is still a PITA. Just because it's the best at surfing the web for a mobile phone doesn't mean it's magically a good experience. It's a situation where it's the "King of the Sewer." In other words, it's still a piece of shit experience, even if it's the best piece of shit experience out there.

Is that supposed to drop this summer too? Wife and I are in the market, but can certainly wait...

iPhone is a rather mediocre device - lame low-rez display compared to HTCs, Xperia etc - and its features are downright sucking compared to current smartphones.

I've owned WinMo 6 devices and WinMo is half-baked at best. It has it's share of problems that a higher res screen can't fix.

For me the iPhone is the first mobile browser that I did not feel was a POS experience. It is, for the most part, enjoyable to use.

It would be better with:

1) More speed. To really fix this we need better processor and battery technology.
2) More stability. This has slowly gotten better but a browser should never crash.
3) Flash. Love it or hate it many sites are broken without it. See #1. Sure we might get a "mobile flash" but I just don't see it ever cutting it. The whole essence of flash is to utilize CPU power to create big effects with minimal data transfer/load times.
4) A real keyboard. As much as I think this would improve the "experience", however, moving parts are likely to make the product less rugged. My 2 year old iPhone 1G looks and works about the same as it did when it was first purchased. I can't say the same for the AT&T 8525 that we went through several replacements within the first year due to worn/broken keys and ribbon cables.

iPhone 3 sounds great. It's annoying that they're excluding iPhone 1G from MMS support. What's up with that? Crappy, cheap basic phones do MMS. There's no extra hardware necessary as demonstrated by SwirlyMMS. This should not be excluded. If they really have to, charge $9.95 for a software upgrade to get it.

A2DP is nice but I'm ok with that being limited to the the 3G.

My Blackjack running WM5 definitely had MMS. However, it didn't work very well. An MMS would come in, but it would often get stuck endlessly trying to download the attachments. Restarting the phone would usually get it to successfully download. Maybe Verizon didn't want to subject MotoQ users to that "POS experience" and disabled the feature?

The iPhone is all right, but I wouldn't trade my HTC Touch Pro for one.

I consider my phone to be superior for my needs (nothing to do with the hi-res screen). iPhone and Winmo are just targeted at different types of consumers at the moment.

It's great to hear that the iPhone is finally getting those seemingly basic functions it was missing.

I use SwirlyMMS and it's great well worth the $8 they charge after the trial period.

I still don't get why it's taken so long...

odd.. I picked my T-mobile MMS service and sent a test message to a friend and asked if he got the picture and he did.. so I had someone send me a picture and it arrived on the phone and shows the little icon.

sad I have to unlock the phone to get all these features :-/

Eh, because what some people are really concerned about are "FLASHY, NEW, AND WOW IT'S APPLE!!"

Yes, a sweeping generalization, but I'm starting to believe it more and more, because of the proof right in front of my eyes. The people I know, from my own experiences, who bought the iPhone, well they don't really use what it offers.

Off topic here, but as time moves on, and smart phones become more popular, I tend to ask those who purchase them: Why?

You know what their response is?

"It's a smart phone. It's cool."
