Re: FINALLY I've played around with the iPhone. I messed with it back when the 2nd update came out for the iPhone, and to be honest, my impression was...well I wasn't really that impressed. Granted, I don't use smart phones often, because I don't have a use for them (but others do, which I understand; not bashing the iPhone or any other smart phone out there.)
I've been reading up on the iPhone, and the updates in general (not a REAL close reading), and maybe I'm missing something, but the hype of the iPhone was a bit over the top. I know someone who purchased it the night the phones came out, and played around with it. It just seemed...like a shiny piece of overhyped technology.
I could be wrong, but that was my impression of the iPhone. -- Do or do not, there is no try! - Yoda |

It is (in my opinion) probably the best phone that I've ever owned now that it has Exchange support (and I can install/use a SIP client over 3G to log into our work PBX) -- but there are definitely areas for improvement and regardless of what people say, surfing the web on it is still a PITA. Just because it's the best at surfing the web for a mobile phone doesn't mean it's magically a good experience. It's a situation where it's the "King of the Sewer." In other words, it's still a piece of shit experience, even if it's the best piece of shit experience out there. |

| For me the iPhone is the first mobile browser that I did not feel was a POS experience. It is, for the most part, enjoyable to use.
It would be better with:
1) More speed. To really fix this we need better processor and battery technology. 2) More stability. This has slowly gotten better but a browser should never crash. 3) Flash. Love it or hate it many sites are broken without it. See #1. Sure we might get a "mobile flash" but I just don't see it ever cutting it. The whole essence of flash is to utilize CPU power to create big effects with minimal data transfer/load times. 4) A real keyboard. As much as I think this would improve the "experience", however, moving parts are likely to make the product less rugged. My 2 year old iPhone 1G looks and works about the same as it did when it was first purchased. I can't say the same for the AT&T 8525 that we went through several replacements within the first year due to worn/broken keys and ribbon cables.
iPhone 3 sounds great. It's annoying that they're excluding iPhone 1G from MMS support. What's up with that? Crappy, cheap basic phones do MMS. There's no extra hardware necessary as demonstrated by SwirlyMMS. This should not be excluded. If they really have to, charge $9.95 for a software upgrade to get it.
A2DP is nice but I'm ok with that being limited to the the 3G. -- AT&T U-Hearse Your funeral. Delivered.

I still don't get why it's taken so long... |

| Eh, because what some people are really concerned about are "FLASHY, NEW, AND WOW IT'S APPLE!!"
Yes, a sweeping generalization, but I'm starting to believe it more and more, because of the proof right in front of my eyes. The people I know, from my own experiences, who bought the iPhone, well they don't really use what it offers.
Off topic here, but as time moves on, and smart phones become more popular, I tend to ask those who purchase them: Why?
You know what their response is?

MattAll noise, no signal.Premium join:2003-07-20 Jamestown, NC kudos:12 | reply to The Limit My girlfriend hasn't put her iPhone down since she bought it. Of course, my daughter didn't even want one because of the on-screen keyboard.
I decided to get one because it was $200 less than the competing BB at the time. I am actually fairly pleased with it. It can do a lot more than I thought (Exchange push, VPN connectivity, SSH support, RDP support, SIP client for work PBX -- across 3G too Jailbroken) that I was never able to do with my other WinMo phones.
I've also found a wealth of nifty apps, like a subnet calculator, pandora streaming radio, a neato conversion app (weights/measurements), along with several other time wasters.
It was completely worth the $99 (yes, $99 refurbed) that I paid for it. |

Ahrenl join:2004-10-26 North Andover, MA | reply to The Limit I have the IPod 2G, and love the thing. But I spend 2 - 3hrs commuting every day. I use it a lot on our wifi at home as well. My wife still controls the TV remote, but now I can disappear into the IPod instead of sleeping through Dancing with the Stars, or Grey's Anatomy.
I haven't even unlocked the thing yet as we had a $15 itunes gift card lying around that has been more than enough to fill the little sucker with entertainment. I bring movie's and TV shows with me for in-flight viewing on business trips as well.
I would get an IPhone if my company supported it, but they are BBerry only. What I'd really like to do is figure out a way to let the Ipod use the BBerry as a modem. |
