That doesn't look good at all. I guess I should count myself as lucky that my problem was in a location under my control and was within my ability to fix.
I'm going shopping later today for phone wire. Home Depot need not apply, as that's where I got the junk that failed in under a year. If I can't find anything that looks better, I think I'll just order 100' of CAT5 from your favorite place [DeepSurplus].

reply to Doctor Olds I was reading that thread and wanted to post in it when I found out I was down again. I guess the other pair in that line wasn't in much better shape. FWIW I'm using 24AWG CAT3. Somehow I thought it would be more durable.
I'll be looking for gnaw marks when I replace it this evening.
