Ok, I got a static IP today finally, and then couldn't resolve any hostnames. I could ping the DNS, ping the gateway, and ping known IPs. When I call to get this checked out, why do they hang up on you?
All I wanted was the IP of a valid DNS server. |

All I wanted was the IP of a valid DNS server. If you are a residential customer with a static IP, you should not be trying to setup your PPPoE connection as a static IP. The symptom you are reporting is normal when you try to manually assign a static IP. This link: »Re: Confused about static Ip option documents a test I did several months ago for just that condition. Just do a normal PPPoE connect and you will get your static IP assigned as well as the officially recommended DNS server(s). Use the screen capture image below as a guide, and you will get your static IP. If you put your static IP in the [Static IP Address] field in the form, you will get the symptom you describe.

If you really want to statically assign DNS servers and you don't want to use the often recommended Level3 servers starting at 4.2.2.1, you might try the OpenDNS servers at 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220, or the at&t Anycast servers at 68.94.156.1 and 68.94.157.1.
I operate my own local DNS servers and I use the at&t Anycast servers as my primary forwarders and the OpenDNS servers as my secondary forwarders.
If you want to use the old AT&T/BellSouth 205.152.x.x servers, I think this is the current recommended list:
State Primary Secondary GA 205.152.37.23 205.152.144.23 FL 205.152.144.23 205.152.132.23 AL/KY/NC/SC 205.152.37.23 205.152.132.23 LA/MS/TN 205.152.132.23 205.152.37.23
FWIW, my router's PPPoE connection is currently getting 205.152.150.23 and 205.152.132.23 assigned. I also did nslookups with each of the DNS server in the above list, and they all work. -- A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. »portscan.dcs-net.net »nature-pics.com |
