Re: Hope Virgin Media isn't blowing smoke

that's a cool story,

but 10 megs was crippling a node? that's kinda weak,

lemme guess you worked for buckeye eh?

my guess is ATTBI (ie Comcast). After @home they cut the unbapped downloads to 1.5mbps, which they for some reason still couldn't actually deliver.

Yeah, I gotta call BS on that one. 10/10 should in no way cripple a node. If 10 megs down or up at any time can cripple a node, and Comcast doles out 16mbit service + Powerboost so it's more like 22, then I feel sorry for the neighbors of the one guy who actually USES his connection.

I remember a year ago when I was on shaws 6 MB down, 1 MB up pakage... I was told I was kicking users off by doing 300-400 GB a month and saturating the node through BT (They said upload was causing errors, as cable can only do so much upload before it gets to be a problem). I believe 10 up would kill a lot of peoples connections.

What I don't believe is the cops busting the guys door down. Unhooking peoples wire, and seeing the guys net go down, isnt proof enough for a warrant...especially not for something like Cable theft. At most, they'd have d/c'd his wire, and watched his house in the future if any problems arose in the future.

10 Mbps UP, or the full bandwidth on DOCSIS 1.1. Make sense now?

DOCSIS 1.x maxes out at 10mbps for the upload. With TCP/IP, things go downhill rapidly once you saturate a connection if there's no QoS.

If it was a Docsis 1.X plant remember that the upload limit is only 9Mbps for the entire channel. Even for D2 upload is only 27Mbps, so taking over a 1/3 of the bandwidth would cause some serious issues during prime time.

On the other hand, anyone dumb enough to be doing this 24/7 from the same location deserves to get caught. If he had just limited himself to off peak hours, odds are pretty high they never would have bothered to track him down(not worth the effort).

Edit: guess I am a little slow today.

no, still doesnt make sense,

i had 10mbps down /1mbps up with optimum online on docsis 1.1 (using a 3com sharkfin modem) many years ago and never experienced any problems. you're telling me that 10 users uploading 1mbps at the same time would be able to cripple a node? Cause it sure as hell never happend when I had optimum online during the docsis 1.1 days.

Yes 10 megs crippled the node
considering the node already was near capacity. And it was 2003/2004 when this happened. They were still running Cisco UBR's back then.

THis was docsis 2.0. Least it wasnt the arris docsis 1.0 cmts's

But yes
10 megs would cause the entire area to go down.

again

this happened in 2003/2004. There was no one offering over 5 megs of service.

THis was after the @home bubble and it was out west. It was in a adelphia area.

But the technology back then, 10 megs would have done that. Problem here is everyone is thinking of the current setup and basing this.

It might have been my fault.

This was in 2003/2004 and it was an old @ home area.
It was in a adelphia footprint and it was in CO

Yep.

It's all about concurrency -- very few people saturate their connection at the same time.

Yea.. back in the days when the horribly over sold modem accounts and people rarely ever saw their actual speeds.. and, back in the days when people REGULARLY talked about speeds slowing to a crawl after 5pm when everyone got home.. remember those days?.. they were long ago becuase they rarely happen any more with that little pest of a thing called network management.

The story the OP is referring to was most likely years ago where MANY things were different and a 10MB line wide open could most certainly affect a node if it had 200 users.. don't forget, too, back several years ago, SOME systems were passing upwards to 1200 homes per node too.

Pretty sure the average people on a node these days is 250 or so, less if your're crazy like OOL.

If you're sharing a shared system that's oversubscribed, you'll eventually run into issues. 'nuff said.

I can tell you, with out a doubt, that the former TWC system here in MN, which was put together with about 4 other systems, I believe, was 1200 homes passed until a bunch of recent splits, while the then ATTbb was no more than about 300 homes per node passed on average.

Some systems were insainly under built.

I believe Comcast's HP number is around 400 now, 250 subscribing. I hear OOL is insanely low, under 100...

Actually yes, it could and did kill nodes on OOL, that's why they started the upload capping bullshit. Actually use your upload and BAM 150 kbit hard cap for you!

I remember those days when speeds would bog down after the kids got home from school, or after 5pm. The old cmts's were really lame compared to what is in use today. I remember the hundreds of service calls also.
