[iPhone] Silencing notifications but allowing calls through at n

Calling all Mac/iPhone experts! I have combed the Net and this has been discussed numerous times by people in my situation--but no solutions have been found.

Right now, I turn off sounds (using the silent mode switch) at night, in order to avoid having the mail notification wake me every time a new email arrives. This is great, except that calls do not come through in silent mode. At night, calls would likely be emergencies, so I'd like them to ring. (I am also afraid I am wearing out the silence switch.)

Is there any way to set the iPhone to turn off all sounds at night, except phone calls? I obviously don't want to have to change the individual notification settings every night, as I wouldn't remember to turn them back on in the morning.

This is where different audio profiles (like the ones found in the most standard cell phones) would be really handy... I searched for an app that would provide this functionality but couldn't find one.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Benjamin

No such setting, I'm afraid. Maybe in OS 3.0.

The stupid email notifications piss me off too at night, as I can't silence the phone totally I need it to ring as well.

I meant to write that I hoped 3.0 would include such an option, even though it wasn't mentioned at the developers' conference... Thanks. Glad to know I am not alone.

It really boggles the mind how the iPhone can lack such basic functions. Heck, it doesn't even have Vibe-Then-Ring.

So true. Amazing device but still lacking some very basic features. 3.0 goes a long way towards fixing this but I think the sleekness of the iPhone's interface is achieved in part by limitting available options...

If you have a jailbroken phone you can download bossprefs and turn off your individual email accounts and leave it on regular mode. When you wake up you can turn your email back on.

I dock mine to a Sony Clock/Radio, if I have the iPod function turned off on the Sony device then the only sounds I hear are phone calls, everything else is muted. I'm assuming because the phone doesn't realize that the Sony has disabled the iPod portion and it is still trying to play those alerts through the dock connector.

Thanks zyncotl. Haven't jailbroken my phone (though I considered it).

Thanks. That's a great workaround! I may have to get my own Sony clock radio for this. Does anyone with an iPhone dock know if it works the same way? I assume not but you never know...

I just go into the Preferences and turn off the New Mail sound; I leave the Preferences app open and just click it again in the morning.

I was thinking the same thing. Can't you turn off vibrate and the mail notification?

Too funny--I was just about to post, because that's exactly what I tried last night! It actually worked well. I thought that if I turned off the phone, it would revert to the main page but, in my test yesterday noticed that it stayed on the settings page. So, not as terrible as I had envisioned.

The only thing that bothers me is that it takes about 5 swipes to turn off the sounds (getting to page with Settings, scrolling down to sounds, etc., etc.) but this is definitely not a bad solution. Thanks.

Alternatively, you can switch your Fetch options to manual overnight so you won't get notifications or new email, and then switch it on again to 15 Minutes or whatever your preference is once you wake up.

That's good if you have one account but I have several, so that would be more work (toggling each one off and on again)--plus one is a push account, so couldn't just turn it off with one swipe, like the others. The beauty of your option, though, is that it also saves battery power by not fetching.

Here's an easy solution that I figured out by accident. Buy a dock/cradle on eBay:

»cgi.ebay.com/Charger-Hotsync-Doc···294%3A50

Then get a 3.5 mm adapter from anywhere like ebay or even cut it off of an old pair of headphones and plug it in to the back of the dock.

»cgi.ebay.com/3-5-male-to-2-5-fem···294%3A50

All notifications will be silent and calls will still ring in case of an emergency. I use this setup and it requires nothing except putting my iphone in the dock every night which I do anyway because i use it as my alarm clock. I also put it in the dock to charge it.

Until there is an app or built in feature to the iphone....this is the best I can come up with.

Also, if you don't use a dock....you can just plug the 3.5 mm adapter into the iphone headphone jack and it will do the same thing.

Thanks, guys. Both good solutions! I am used to manually turning off notifications now but may give this a try.

Yeah, I used to manually do it myself but using the dock is so much easier. I used to forget sometimes when doing it manually but now I never do because it's always docked at night.

My wife loves me now. It used to piss her off big time when I would forget.

You don't have to do each account manually.

The "Push" account follows the push preference, turn it off and it defaults to the "Fetch" preferences. Any account that is not a "Push" account automatically defaults to the "Fetch" settings. I have 5 accounts on my iphone, 2 are push, 3 are fetch.

I turn push off and fetch to manual and none of them get mail. I don't have to do each account manually.
