I dock mine to a Sony Clock/Radio, if I have the iPod function turned off on the Sony device then the only sounds I hear are phone calls, everything else is muted. I'm assuming because the phone doesn't realize that the Sony has disabled the iPod portion and it is still trying to play those alerts through the dock connector.

Thanks. That's a great workaround! I may have to get my own Sony clock radio for this. Does anyone with an iPhone dock know if it works the same way? I assume not but you never know...
