Have you ever played a tank? It's the exact opposite. Stand at max range and don't get aggro.

Being a mage is pretty simple right now. If you want something easy to start with, but not necessarilly the top DPS build, go frost. The rotation is Frostbolt, Frostbolt, Frostbolt, Frostbolt, pop elemental, Frostbolt, Frostbolt, Frostbolt....you get the point.

As long as you don't want to raid that works. When you get kicked from a raid at least you know why too!

He has NEVER played a mage. Would jumping into a raid the very first thing he does even be what you would suggest?

Very much so. When you can see other people play your job you can understand your own job. You can ask questions, look at their gear, see their specs, etc. This is a game after all not brain surgery. No one's life is affected by gimping yourself with a frost spec or gimping yourself with a know good raiding spec you just don't have the gear or skill to play. The difference is a know good spec means only the gear or play is bad which can be fixed. A bad spec means you have to fix everything. Just do FFB or AB spam if you must at least you'll be set to expand your dps and rotation to it's full potental eventually.
