Anyway what would happen if I use this on my Cox account LOL That all depends on how much you have to pay to rent it. Here in NYC, TWC includes the modem in your monthly charge, and there is no discount to not using their device. Furthermore, if you buy your own $100 unit and it breaks before your 2 year "break even period" then tough luck. You THEN need to go drop another $100 on a new modem. Lastly, there is always the possibility that the modem you buy wont be supported (or even work). Try calling tech support with a non-company provided modem and they almost immediately blame all problems on that device. In my opinion having your own modem provides absolutely zero benefit and is a total hassle. YMMV! -- When you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat. -Ronald Reagan-

Unless maybe they were tampered with first. Absolutely ALL the time! I have personally had numerous units fail. I have also had to assist a number of friends and family with issues and the culprit was almost always the cable modem. There is a reason that when you call tech support the first line in their "script" is something about resetting the cable modem. After you run through the script if its not fixed the next thing they do is dispatch to replace the unit. -- When you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat. -Ronald Reagan-

First of all I didn't pay jack crap for my Modem SB5120 I got it for free after rebate so why wouldn't I do that? Second of all most of all modems come with a 1 year warranty so if you buy it and it fails within 1 year, get it replaced. Third of all.. 100 dollars? Dude Newegg has been selling Motorola surfboards all the time for like around 50 free shipping. Just pointing this out. So if the D3 modem cost 100 dollars then rent for a little, and when it goes down then buy it.

Maybe if it fails within the first few days, but you certainly cant go back to Walmart 8.5 months after purchase and have them give you a new one. They will make you send it into the manufacturer, which is where the delay will occur. -- When you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat. -Ronald Reagan-

In the 5 states I have lived in I have never seen Walmart even check the date on something being returned for exchange. As long as the product appears not to have been damage (not beat on) they never blink, just say "go grad a replacement". As long as they have a replacement, no issue.

Here's a few points, however,
1) I typically agree with you that renting is the better way.. it's less hassle and you're covered against problems and down time.
2) Renting a modem CAN and often does end up costing more. I'm not sure if you and your friends are having bad luck, but the average cable modem last LONGER than 24 months. I've seen MANY modems in accounts for 5 years or more. Usually the system out-dates the modem, before the modem dies.
3) If you have your own modem and it goes dead and you want a replacement, you can often do an advance exchange with some makers where you secure it with a credit card, they ship you a modem and you return yours or they charge you. However, the downtime is equal to that of about the same as waiting for the cable guy to show up, sometimes.
4) If your owned modem does go bad and you're waiting a few weeks to get yours replaced by the maker, you don't get a credit for down time, BUT, you are MORE than welcome to go to any cable store and pick up a rental which would be a $3 problem for a month. Just becuase you own a modem doesn't stop you from leasing one as long as you need one.
The bottom line is there are pros and cons to both sides of owning vs renting and there is no one smart way to doing it. Some win out by renting, and some lose... some win by owning, and some lose.. it all depends. To be quite honest, some people don't care about the cost to own, they'd rather not see a charge on their bill for one. Further, and this sounds snotty, but not all people have to pinch their pennies that hard that a $60 cable modem purchase won't kill them. Not everyone is in such financial hardship or living on such a tight budget that it matters to them to own one.. its a personal preference.

Warranty goes through the manufacturer unless Walmart gave you there own warranty, and 6 to 8 weeks? You live off snail mail? 1920's mail system? I replaced one of my cousins SB5101's when it had warranty the company took 5 days to give it to me. That doesn't seam that bad.
