I've had the same modem for 4 years. Never had an issue. That's 48 months of renting at $3 per month. Not too much of a savings over $110 (with tax) for a $99 cable modem. Seems like the extra $30 is like insurance. Now if this thing were to last another 4 years, am I really going to be upset about the fact that it cost me $150? probably not.
