I'm buying...

DOCSIS 3 isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Thus 36 months to amortize the mdem and I come out on top.

I have my own D2 modem right now (Zoom 5241, $20ish off of eBay). It'll pay for itself shortly.

The SB6120 is a solid modem anyhow, so probably will have resale value. It's a Moto, not a ReallyCrappyAssociates brand, so it'll last.

Unless of course I decide to grab a loop and haul in super-cheap, uncapped bandwidth from a local datacenter

When I got comcast, they leased me an SB5101 that I had for a few years, and those had been out a few years, and AFAIK my friends who have those are still using them with no issues.

I doubt they'd crap out after a year or two.

The leased modem I got was a Scientific Atlanta. Seems like they may be leasing out RCAs now for D2, and SA boxes for D3, maybe some SBs as well.

Seems like the SA modems are cheap on the provider side...back home (TWC area) I'm seeing 'ema ll over the place.
