Why not just build a better router, install a custom Linux or *BSD distro, and tweak the hell out of it?
That's another device with another wall power plug that takes up additional space. I'm not justifying the price of the card, but it does do more than just get you online.
If I had money to blow, I'd consider one. It'd be more for the external processing and stuff. It sounds like I could run my chat program directly on that rather than on the PC, which means I could get rid of the second sound card I have too.
