Own Cable Boxes?

Im soon to be moving into a Mountain Cable area and would like to know if I can buy 3rd party cable boxes and activate through mountain... will they allow it as long as its one of their models? I know some allow and some don't. (I cant believe they do not have an HD box that takes HDMI that isnt a PVR)

Also, does anyone know if they will charge to run cable outside to get it into an upstairs room? Im currently with Starchoice and they are willing to do this for free.

Any info on what their policies are on this are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Don't know about the 3rd party box but to run the cable up the second floor should be free. They provide up to 3 outlets at no charge.

Well... that can be done, but not easily, also need to know what they will and won't activate. Myself I have a non-mountain DCT2500 sitting not 10 feet from here that works like a charm

Don't gripe at them... gripe @ Motorola and Pace, they are the companies who manufacture the boxes, not Mountain.

Probably. But consider this, Starchoice has to run it out the wall and onto the roof. Much quicker and easier than out the wall, down the wall, around to where the cable comes in from the street, and either connect it in the box outside, or drill it back into the house (usually into your utility room) and connect it there. Not to mention, if their rates are comparable, (For comparison, Cogeco does all that work for $30) I think that it's worth it, considering that 50' of RG-6 will run you $15-$20 plus ends(which are not nearly as good as the compression ones used by the pros) plus a splitter (again not as good), not to mention it will take you twice as long if not more to do it yourself, and there's a lot of know-how involved.

I actually wired up 3 rooms by myself. It's not difficult at all. I did it the proper way and cut out holes in the wall, fished the cables through, installed low voltage brackets and Decora wallplates that have cable and CAT plugs. Most companies just drill a hole in your expensive hardwood floors or the wall and terminate the cable.

Thanks for the responses, it sounds like if they do charge it wont be too much.

When you say "Not easily" with regards to the boxes, is there something in the box itself or software related that causes it to be a challenge? I have a standard box from Source cable (Might actually be a DCT 2500)... what would have to happen for me to use that one with Mountain?

Lastly about the HDMI box my gripe was more about the fact that it isnt offered in general, not a shot at Mountain. Im really actually looking forward to moving from Source/Starchoice to Mountain. From what i read and hear they are a great provider.

Coming from Source I would imagine they would accept the box.
You may need proof of purchase though, best to call and find out.

They'll ask you which provider the box is comming from, then call the provider to verify the status of the box, (that's what they did with my Purchased Cogeco unit).

Secondly I am not certain which programming frequency Source uses (if it's the same you're all set). Cogeco and mountain are different, but I am able to reprogram that on particular units. If you look on the bottom of the box it should have a model # something like DCT2524/1661/acdef or something like that. If you post it I can break it down and let you know exactly what needs to be done.
