Re: [Cooling] Aftermarket - 4850

I ordered the Twin Turbo and a 12PWM case fan by AC as well. I've been meaning to get that fan for a long while. I was waiting to get it with something.

I already have the Freezer 64 Pro and very satisfied with it. Which is why I considered this company again.

I hope I install the cooler right. Haven't replaced a VGA cooler before.

I'll post some pics after I install them both. If I remember.

for the large part aftermarket VGA coolers are a waste of money. stock coolers usually arent set up efficiently and you can dramatically reduce temperatures by tweaking the fan settings and/or reseating the stock cooler with good thermal paste. besides lower stock temps, OCing a modern gfx card rarely increases performance equal to the money spent on the cooler. generally speaking, it's often better to purchase a better gfx card out of the gate with the money saved from a cooler. sometimes it's not, but adding a cooler and increase an OC rarely increases the performance by any noticeable amt.

don't be fooled, the fan in that cooler is designed to run 100% speed for years without failure. you may have been able to create an easy CCC fan profile to lower the thresh hold for the fan speed %'s. theres some easy tutorials found across the net on CCC fan profiles and you can also do it with RivaTuner and Ati Tray Tools.

edit: also wanted to add that temperates are completely relative. 78 C is smoking hot for most CPUs while that's pretty normal for modern GPU cores. some G90-series nvidia's hit over 100 C under load and my 4870x2 idled at 80 on both cores before i tweaked the fan (now it idles at 55-60 and i still dont hear the fan). GPU are designed to and regularly run hotter than most people are used to and this scares folks. it's unfounded fear, however, as these cards have twice the TDP as CPUs when idle and as high as 4x when under load.

Running the GPU fan anything above 55%, you can hear it.

stock is generally 28% so that's twice as fast and you still cant hear it between 50-60 in many systems. that alone drops temps a good 10 C
