| [ fiber tech] Fios and TW Cable
I posted this message in the FiberOptic forum and got a respone from someone who said it was highly unlikely that Verizon would piggyback Fios over coax if the coax was also being used by a cable provider.
Does anyone have any direct experince with this? Am I going to have to use Verizon as a cable provider and ISP if I want to get Fios? Or if I want to keep my current cable provider and add Fios would I have to string another coax from the Fios box to the modem/router? |

| Another piece of coax is going to be your best bet. I can't say if MOCA over TW's cable is technically possible without disrupting each other's service, doing so will invariably result in the blame game should there be any problems.
Is there a reason you don't want a 2nd line ran? If I was only getting data, i would insist it was hooked up with Cat5 anyways and avoid the whole need for the MOCA bridge in the Actiontec. |

| reply to scodd I have been calling Fios trying to get an availability date in our area and finally got a special number for support because we are in a near out of fanchise zone. All the tech support so far has told me that piggybacking Fios over the same coax that is running TM cable will work. But the last tech from Verizon said that the line from the ont box to the modem is actually a cat5 not a coax. This is a bit confusing since two previous techs said it was coax and could be piggybacked and the web site shows coax as well. It states "The ONT will be connected to the existing coax cabling in your home...."
At this address: »www22.verizon.com/Residential/Fi···tion.htm
Can someone let me know if the run from the ont to the modem is normally done by Verizon using cat5 or coax or are the ont and modems they use setup to use either one, like they should be?
I know the signal could be run over either one, but running a new line from the side of the house where the ont will be, then across the attic and to the room where the modem will be would be quite a task. |

| reply to cdru I don't mind running the second line, or at least having them run the line since they say it would be included in installation, but I don't think they would agree once they saw what would have to be done to get a new cable stung across the attic. Maybe they could move the location of the ont box to a wall outside the room where the modem and router are setup now. I guess another option would be to setup the modem and router in a room closer to the wall that the ont will be mounted on the outside of, except then I would have to reroute all the cat5 cables that hook up the rest of the house to the new router location. What a pain that would be. Plus, that room itslef is not wired at this time. It would be much simpler if the signals could just be piggy backed over the same coax. That way there would be no need to rewire anything inside the house. |

| I am a Fios Tech, and our ONT is capable of using either coax or cat5 to run from the ONT to the router, however if you will have our video service coax must be hooked into the router as well. All of the services except the picture run over the internet(ie the guide, video on demand, and DVR functions. What we typically do as techs is us the same RG6 coax that enters the house, especially if you are getting both data and video. We use the single feed from the ONT to the splitter. All set top boxes and the router will be hooked to the splitter. Hope this helps. |

I dont believe TW would be very happy about having another signal share its coax and the inherent support problems it would cause.

@jcpenney.com | reply to FriscoFiosGuy Cool, thanks for the info FriscoFiosGuy. That means the only new cabling that has to be done will be to the outside of the house. Perfect. We will probabley continue using TW for tv and start using Fios as soon as it is available. |

| If you are getting only FiOS internet, VZ can piggyback the MOCA WAN (internet over coax) over the existing TW coax using a MOCA NID. MOCA uses frequencies above those used by TV.
What FriscoFiosguy described applies to intenet + TV where FIOS is replacing another cable provider for both. You can not have FIOS TV on the same coax as another cable company. |

| reply to scodd There is a way to combine TW and FiOS over the same coax by way of a MoCA NID. It has 4 ports on it. RF out, ONT in, Home Coax, Coax in. Picture it like this. ONT Coax goes to ONT in. Coax in gets TW feed. RF out has a 75ohm Terminator. Signals are combined going through Home Coax. TW video goes through as well as FiOS Data. |
