Getting rid of Comcast

I'm canceling service with Comcast once my Fios installation is in place. If I get good customer service with my cancel request, I'll report back.

Don't hold your breath however.

Sir, with all due respect (I do appreciate what you try to do for Comcast, daily. It shows dedication which is always good by me), 30-40% of my neighborhood features either Dish Network and DirecTV satellite dishes. 60% of my neighborhood is itching for Verizon to finish their build out so they can switch. The other 40% don't care either way.

Honestly, a 250GB Bandwidth Limit and vicious traffic shaping doesn't do much to change my opinion.

Well said!! I definitely give the Comcast guys here credit but in the end it is the policy and political game Comcast is playing that sours me. Comcast needs to start being consumer friendly rather than heading down a path that may just end up making them look like the next AIG spotlight where the public wants heads to roll.

I can only pray Verizon buys Qwest and Fios gets deployed. My sister is already ready to jump ship from Comcast where she lives as soon as Fios is finished being deployed in her neighborhood.

every company does some short of network managment. and for a home internet connection anyone using more then 250gb are either doing work related stuff on a home connections and needs to get a business connection. or they are downloading tons of music and movies they should not be

Yep. 250GB limit and traffic shaping is a deal breaker no matter you slice it. You guys move to DOCSIS3 but yet you still have caps in place.

I absolutely HATE the "Don't blame us for crappy performance on our network that we built and maintain, blame your neighbor for using it!" mentality.

Want to make this clear. I by no means have even come close to that cap but...

You need to look to the future in what type of services are coming and have actually already arrived. VOD services (here already), online storage (Comcast is going to be offering), etc.... Those are all heavy bandwidth services and could kill that cap quickly depending on how many movies you watch a month or how much you plan on backing up to a remote storage service.

So I wouldn't say anyone using that much is doing business work or dl'ing tons of music and movies (I assume you mean file sharing here). A home network connection is meant to be for home use and VOD services and cloud storage are home use items IMHO.

Or maybe one could open their minds to the broader uses of the internet such as the distribution of games coming in at 8-16 GB's each, distribution of streaming movies, music, and television shows through channels such as NetFlix, Last.fm, and Hulu. I don't even need to begin to tell you how much each distro of Linux weighs in at.

I'm sorry JT, but not everything on the internet is illegal you know. Maybe some of us just wish to use our connections for what they're meant for.

Edit: Oh, by the way, before I forget, residential areas are not split off. When a person orders a business line through Comcast and resides in a residential area, they'll still have a residential line. If that doesn't make sense, let me put it this way: One would still be subject to the same 250GB cap and traffic shaping, just with a higher price tag. So, honestly, it doesn't matter. But the previous point renders this moot anyway.

It's been a rather slow month for me...

Just curious.. what area of the country are you in that you have Fios available with Qwest that near by as you're posting from a Qwest dsl line.

Good luck. Block out at least an hour. Once they decide you are in fact canceling they will put you on hold for at least 45 minutes hoping you'll change your mind of just get frustrated and hang up before the order is entered. Then, once you put the cancellation order in you will be nagged for money you do not owe, not to mention the three-ring circus of equipment return miscommunication and crediting between your local office and Philly.

I hear calling your local PSC or who ever in your municipality controls the distribution of franchises can really speed things along.

That may work where there is actually such a thing, but here Comcast just ignores them. Then the franchising authority shrugs and says "Well, what do you want us to do? If they leave nobody will have cable." Talk about bought and paid for...

Just to add here.

From the "if they leave nobody will have cable" Not only are they bought and paid for now, they are the reason for only having Comcast in an area. If they would stop blocking competition they could then say "let them leave we have other providers in the area".

Us citizens are the only ones to blame here as we voted the idiots in that appointed the weak minded fools who except bribes into those organizations that regulate.

The weak minded fools are mostly suburban mayors who banded together in search of more leverage over Comcast. They got the lever, all right...

Here in Maryland, one of the counties went ahead and fined Comcast for every day they took to long to answer the phone.

whereismycall

@comcast.net

And Comcast answer to poor service levels, route more of the support calls to their contractors. The Comcast call center workers sit idle to keep the call center service level numbers inflated. No joke...

It was Montgomery County:

Perhaps other jurisdictions can learn from their example.
