| reply to dsloperin Re: How many of you could remeber the first mmo you played?
Yea i used to play FFXI for about a year in 2003. It was fun but now ive moved on to WoW. To me the fact that when you die in wow you can just run back to your body ruins the danger element. I remember running from town to town and it taking 30-40 minutes. That was a pain in the ass but it added another element to the game. -- »www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/8/8/ |

| reply to Aramis604 said by Aramis604 :If you consider a MUD an MMO, than it was DragonRealms. If not then the first true MMO was Asheron's Call. I was wondering if anyone was going to say AC.
AC came out right around the same time EQ did, and pretty much had the same effect. I remember just being completely lost, and the feeling of submersion was awesome. I remember seeing people in GSA and thinking I could NEVER get to that point. I remember the first time I solo'd an Umbris Shadow....and then working my ass off to get bowstrings to make my composite...lol.
I still think AC had the best PvP, esp. w/ slide casting and actually being able to dodge spells. Man that was fun. |

They had a free open beta and it was just like a free sample of crack. ditto i dont regret anything in my life. bad experiences only teach me...eventually, but i do wish i had spent a LOT less time in L2 than almost 2 years. it became a job. i had no concept of a FUN MMO so i stuck with it...as a Warlord...and wasted 2 years of my life... but now i know better. i picked up wow eventually pre-BC, played for probably 1.5 years until i stopped having fun in BC and then quit. now i dont play any MMOs b/c i know my MMO personality...it's not good for real life. | reply to dsloperin I started with Dungeon Siege, it was a nice concept and some fun, the best part is the online part was free, you would group casually and world was somehow big, you could level easily.
The the first paid MMORPG was Dark Age of Camelot, was kinda like WoW, I never saw the light of the raid concept, then came expansions, navigating thru seas in boats was a bit boring, then the 3rd where you at last got into instances and then PvPs. Instances were weird, you could solo most of them! sometimes you saw people outside and get invited.
3rd and last was WoW, been playing a year and still at it, now I know the concept of a Tank, DPS and Healer, raids, etc |

| reply to dsloperin The Two Towers MUD - I still maintain that it handled PVP/theft in the best manner I've ever seen in a game until this day (entirely self governing law system). Words would escape me to see this system implemented into a modern day MMO.
M59 was the first graphical MMO I was involved in and I left thinking "that's a neat concept."
Everquest just blew me away. The early feelings of that game will most likely never be duplicated.
I've since been involved in just about every MMO to hit the market. |

Oh come on now. You had to have fun sometime during the 2 years you played. Ever go red? Go on a PK'n spree with an alt? Castle siege? Wars?
I played on Devianne server because of a better ping, though Bartz was more popular. The first clan I was in was Lotus and we first went after the farmers, forgot the name of the clan now, when they started to interfere with new people trying to level.
Anyway, I keep up with some folks that feel the same way you do but occasionally visit Lineage II for a variety of reasons.
I may pick it back up, but it will only be during the winter months since I am indoors anyway hibernating. -- If you are having half as much fun as I am, then I must be having twice the fun than you are. Do The Math! |

| reply to Juke Box i had fun on gank runs, pk spreeds, and castle sieges. my clan was probably the most hated clan on Kain and thats the way we liked it. the game itself has so many inherent flaws that it's a chore to even play. i quit at lvl 70 b/c it took literally an hour of mindless grinding to get a half percent of XP in the most ideal grps with outside buffers and sometimes healers. then dieing in castle sieges even with reduced XP loss and 90% rezzes and you're still out 4 hours of farming to gain it back since you die at least a few times each siege... 2 hours of fun with 4+ hours to recover? no thanks -- Somnambulator - t3h 5133pw41k3r

| reply to dsloperin My first MMO was UO. I picked it up not even realising it had a monthly fee. I didn't like the idea of it, but I tried it out anyway. I was hooked almost imediately. Got PK'd a lot. I can't remember a game getting my heart racing more than fighting the PKs. Finally winning was nice too. I played it for around 7 years. I went on to try EQ, FFXI, CoH/CoV, but the only game that's held my attention like UO did is WoW. Over 5 years and still going strong. |

| Interesting that an avid UO player would enjoy WoW. They are like polar opposites on the 'sandbox' scale. One is like dating Jack the Ripper, and the other like Edith Bunker. -- THIS IS SPENCER. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED - I HAVE JOE. RETURNING TO BASE. |

Haven't seen it mentioned and may not be what was thought of when the question was asked. Played it from later beta stages up to about two years ago.
