In my 2002 house it is hanging on the side of my furnace.
That probably a thermostat transformer.

1 edit		 I traced it out when I installed a transformer for my humidifier - it is definitely for the doorbell.

Edit: The furnace is in the basement between the front and back doors directly under the hallway with the bell. Probably was the easiest location to pull wire to both doors from. It was a surprise to find it mounted there I will admit.
