Re: Personally I think the average is a bit skewed.... Averages are not always the most measure of central tendency. And since the report doesn't give the standard deviation of the average they reported, the number is pretty worthless. I'd wager a guess that the standard deviation for the sample representing the US is fairly high, meaning there is a WIDE variation in the speeds Akamai observed in their sample. Simple put, the reported average poorly represents the state of broadband in the US.

| Try living in Canada where it's more about the Stifling of innovation and technological advancement with Bell and Rogers.
BUT!!! We also do not have a tyrannical government running the scene...there isn't rampant starvation, clean water, all the amenities that we can take for granted. While the broadband state here DOES bug the crap outta me still there is much to be grateful for that this country does offer.
Still, I hope Bell and Rogers go down. |

Bell and Rogers going down is the LAST thing you need. You just railed about the stifling of innovation and technological advancement, and nothing causes that more than having a monopoly. With only one (or even two) major players in a market there is no real competition, no incentive to develop new products or technologies, and no need to engage in price-cutting.
If you really wanted to see a change in the Canadian ISP landscape you'd want not only Bell and Rogers (and Shaw, and Cogeco, and Videotron, etc.) but many other major players. |
