As most Telco based Wireless providers go to LTE, WiMAX will be more of a niche. Too many 'bell' style carriers have many millions/billions invested in a) spectrum supported by CDMA/GSM/UMTS and soon LTE (reuse?), and 2G/3G/4G compatibility b) international roaming agreements c) handset vendors/chipset vendors (except Intel)
I don't have anything against WiMAX - this is more of a large scale issue. +3 billion GSM based handsets with global coverage. »www.3gamericas.org/documents/LTE···2009.pdf
I do think that WiMAX can make inroads in: - replacement of ADSL - low(er) cost mobile broadband - integrated devices - 'emerging markets' - rural areas that need data and have none. |

This will most likely require a special run of handset just for Verizon. Either that or they will use standard phones and weld a SIM into the case such that it cannot be removed. -- I support the right to keep and arm bears. |

join:2001-01-26 Valencia, CA | I suspect that Verizon's 'support' of SIM cards will be some form of hack - either fixed SIM card, or forcing of a SIM card to IMEI so that you can not switch handsets w/o going through them. -- Canada = Hollywood North |
