Was I just upgraded?

The OP is probably referring to "speedtierextreme2" in the "Blast" config file name and not the "Extreme" tier. -- Write me up a 125.......I Can't Drive 55 »redrocker.com/ »cabowabo.com/

| | | | Yes, that's what I meant "speedtierextreme2" is now "ultra" in the log file. Speeds have definitly increased, downloads went from 15-17mbps to 24mbps | |

| | | | 3 edits | Re: Hummm, log file went from Extreme to Ultra?? No, I was using giganews and du meter. I'll download something and run du meter's stopwatch and post the results.
Here you go:
DU Meter Stopwatch - #1 Start time 4/2/2009 11:13:51 PM Stop time 4/2/2009 11:15:28 PM Elapsed time 1 min 36.2 sec Incoming ------------------------------------ ---------------- ---------------- Total of data transferred 266.6 MB Maximum transfer rate 34.7 Mbps Average transfer rate 23.3 Mbps
DU Meter Stopwatch - #2 Start time 4/2/2009 11:22:14 PM Stop time 4/2/2009 11:23:36 PM Elapsed time 1 min 22.4 sec Incoming ------------------------------------ ---------------- ---------------- Total of data transferred 239.8 MB Maximum transfer rate 33.4 Mbps Average transfer rate 24.4 Mbps

It does look like you've got a faster speed. I'd also do a speed test as well....Interesting to say the least.
|
| | | | | | 1 edit | Re: Hummm, log file went from Extreme to Ultra?? Here's one using a 600meg file:
DU Meter Stopwatch - #3 Start time 4/2/2009 11:58:06 PM Stop time 4/3/2009 12:01:35 AM Elapsed time 3 min 29.2 sec Incoming ------------------------------------ ---------------- ---------------- Total of data transferred 609.4 MB Maximum transfer rate 35.4 Mbps Average transfer rate 24.4 Mbps
I still get powerboost but after that's done my speed stays right at or around 24.1mbps according to du meter.

| Ultra should = 22/5. There were some rumors posted here a ways back the eventually 16/2 would disappear and only 12/2, 22/5, and 50/10 would remain(makes sense to spread/better define 3 distinct levels of service, 12/2 & /16/2 are way too similar) I would assume pricing would end up somewhere in between, maybe existing performance plus (16/2) users would get grandfathered for 3-6-12 months. | |

| Yes, they should, but maybe they want to try give a little taste ( the first one is always free.) then once you're hooked, you get the notice of the original tier disappearing, so you need to pay an extra $10 and get a new modem or drop back to 12/2. (the extra $10 might be waved for the grandfathered period) Seems odd to write/rename the config file for a modem that shouldn't have it, unless there is some future to it. | |

2 edits | Re: Hummm, log file went from Extreme to Ultra?? well, yeah it is. I think normally the upsell would be simple. they say the 16/2 tier is going away, but you can have 22/5 for just $10 more a month, but if you sign up now, the fee remains the same for 6 months. (knowing once exposed many won't bother or want to downgrade, at the end of 6 months) it's the new modem that makes it complex.
The another possibility is they need to stress test the system for the 22/5 tier, and are temporaily assigning some 16/2 users to 22/5 and whatching their throughput rates. or the same problem as many of us have seen in other areas, an inconsistant naming convention for config files, is causing some (both customers and CSR's) to be confused as to which one goes with which tier. leading to a few over and under provisioned users (few complain about being over provisioned)

2 edits | Re: Hummm, log file went from Extreme to Ultra?? I don't know one way or the other, but that sort of tactic would backfire here. I have options and I wouldn't take well to being treated in that manner.
It's possible they are testing. It is possible somebody sent the wrong config file, too.
Edit: It would be interesting to hear from others in the area of Gary, IN to see if this is more widespread than just one modem.

| Re: Hummm, log file went from Extreme to Ultra?? I agree using users as guinea pigs usually does'nt end well, even hen someone gets a free temporary speed increase out of it, the are likely to be angry when it ends. Informed consent is the best policy. Still that config file represents something different. | |

If that's with TV service, that sounds like the Ultra tier price. Basically, they were charging you more before so now I believe you could downgrade to Performance Plus (16/2) and save a few dollars or keep the Ultra (22/5) and either swap your modem or purchase a new DS 3 modem. This may not be good planning on their part, but I don't think its a bait and switch tactic or anything akin to that.
Ultra will work with your current modem, its just not optimal as it can not take advantage of the multiple channels and as such you may not receive consistently the speeds you are expecting depending on the network utilization. I would definitely call to confirm, it sounds like to me they are re-aligning your area's pricing / service level to match their national.

| | I work at Comcast in Illinois. True story: we just launched the 22 Mbps and 50 Mbps speeds in Gary (and much of the rest of NW Indiana that falls into the Chicago DMA). Customers like you with 16/2 Mbps Blast! roll to 22/5 Mbps Ultra. Customers with 8/2 Performance PLUS go to 16/2 Blast! Customers with 6/1 Performance go to 12/2 Performance. This speed increase is not temporary, and your price doesn't change. | |

| | I actually just randomly called them yesterday to see if it was available here yet because of the posts in the docsis 3.0 thread. They told me that I was automatically upgraded already and it had already launched in my area. The website still shows that I am unable to get it and that it is "Coming Quickly" or whatever.
However.....the person on the phone said I was definitely already automatically upgraded from 16/2 to 22/5 but that he recommended that I get a docsis 3.0 modem. I opted to rent from them so I have an installed coming out Monday with the modem to set it all up. I may buy one after the fact but I wanted him to come out to ensure that the service does in fact exist and work at the posted speeds.
I am in the Griffith/Highland/Munster area of Norhtwest Indiana.

KearnstdElf WizardPremium join:2002-01-22 Mullica Hill, NJ | did you by any chance upgrade to oh say the HD Premier Triple Play? that comes with ultra however not all techs remember that a tech needs to be rolled to install a D3 modem.
but the D2 modems will provision at that speed simply because the hardware can go that fast, but the D3 modem is technically required because the D2 isnt capable of bonding the downstream so its trying to get all that speed on a single channel. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports
