Then don't advertise those channels as being part of exanded basic when it's CLEAR you'll have to upgrade to the digital tier to get them.
you don't need a digital tier to get them, you just need a cable box, or cable card to decrypt them. if they weren't encrypted, then everyone with basic only, or internet only would receive those expanded channels. since they are part of the expanded line up, they have to encrypt them. The thread is almost as productive as talking about the NFL network.

which Charter will gladly charge you extra for.

Listen first of all asked a LEGITMATE question. Second if you don't like MY thread you don't have to post in it. In fact I don't recall asking you to do so. if yo don't like my threads/post there is an ignore feature I suggest you use it. I'll be using it on you from now on.

There's a cost to encryption, decryption, and authorization to keep people from stealing and the system open for future channel flexibility. It's not like Charter gets this stuff for free. Plus they're moving channels to digital to free up bandwidth for all the HD channels and internet speeds their users are demanding.

It's the nature of the industry. Comcast is doing it, Verizon FIOS is doing it, TWC is doing it, along with the majority of all the other cable providers. Others never gave you a choice, like Uverse, Dish and DirecTV.

Which was answered repeatedly. The channels your TV doesn't get are encrypted.

you might want to call in and ask for an hd box, they have been running a few 2 year deals in the camden area lately and it incluces an hd box at no extra charge whether they have an hd tv or not. i have been told that the package is actually cheaper with the hd box than it is with the digital box

When you see a channel on a expanded basic line-up that says digital only it means that in order to recieve the channel you need a digital set-top reciever. Thats just the way it is.

Then that's not expanded basic then. Which means that's fraud. At any rate have a guy coming out tomorrow to bring the HD box since the "local" office( 30 miles away ) doesn't allow you to pick them up there.

Each year Charter moves more and more channels to the digital tier. Which is fine that their choice except if they are still calling them EXPANDED BASIC that is basically a lie
They do move more and more channels, because more and more people are complaining about not having enough HD or want faster internet. How do you make room for more HD? Move channels off analog to digital.

The reason these are encrypted, like others have already pointed out, is for security. If they were left unencrypted then customers who only pay for basic cable or internet could receive those channels as the frequency they are on is beyond a filter's range in most cases. Sure, you pay for those channels, but you also received the equipment to watch them. Since most TVs are not addressable devices unless they have a cable card slot, there is no other way to protect against theft.

If cable companies (ALL of them, not just Charter) didn't encrypt channels then everyone would get these channels whether they paid for them or not. There's a good chance everyone's bill would go up to cover the cost of the lost revenue due to unauthorized viewing, or there would no longer be a 'basic' tier. And frankly, the number of people who are upset by this issue are probably outnumbered 100,000 to 1 by those who would be upset by having their bill go up.

Until enough people are ready to give up analog and go all-digital, or 99% of people suddenly buy cable-card ready TVs, then this will not change. Try asking a satellite or Uverse customer how well their TV works without a box they got from their provider.

It's not fraud. You might feel it's BS, but it's fully disclosed and there is no deception involved.

It IS expanded because that is the tier it is in. You don't need any other tier above that to get it.

You do need equipment to decrypt it though, which can be a cable box or a CableCARD equipped device live a TV or Tivo.

The extra equipment required does NOT mean it is not expanded basic.

Do you think that just because a user may have an older analog tuner TV and can't get broadcast ABCHD (a Basic Tier channel) because their equipment is not capable, that makes it not a BASIC channel?

Looking up YOUR zip code on Charter's website, the above BASIC and EXPANDED BASIC channels are Digital Only.

The Digital Only Expanded Basic channels are probably encrypted so anyone just getting Basic won't receive them even if they have a Digital Tuner.

Is this so hard to understand?

For some people yes it is hard to understand, also if you read the sub-notes on your channel card the expanded basic digital only channels say set-top box may be required to recieve channels.

Just because it is expanded basic doesn't mean it has to be analog. If you would have looked around here or simply asked before hand I'm sure that many would have pointed this out for you. Instead however, your question has been answered repeatedly and yet you're still challenging the responses like you do in so many other threads around here. It seems to me like you're turning your own thread into a rant at this point.
