| Not only that but they are the most successful getting younger viewers. This is the best segment for networks in regards to advertisers. (Young audiences have the most disposable income.) So while Fox may have the highest ratings it is very conceivable MSNBC is making more money from advertisers.
MSNBC Executives Courting Younger Viewers - Network Goes HD June 29
Television news may be a graying genre. But MSNBC is staking out a younger viewer.
"It's the millenials," said the 63-year-old Chris Matthews."They're not watching Larry King. They're watching Rachel [Maddow]."
Mathews made an appearance at Cable Show '09 Thursday with Maddow and MSNBC president Phil Griffin.
"I think we take a particular focus on younger viewers," said Maddow. "And I think we are succeeding there." MSNBC hit a milestone in the just-concluded first quarter ratings period, surpassing CNN in primetime and the morning in news' target sales demographic of 25-to-54-year-olds. But perhaps equally important to Griffin, is the fact that MSNBC was also the top-rated news network among persons 18 to 34, the so-called millenials.
And the millenials are the future.
"We're going to win the battle with younger viewers," said Griffin, adding that MSNBC does sell against the 18-to-34 demo.. "That's the battle we've staked out."
MSNBC's first-quarter ratings success, its best quarter in its 12-plus history, vindicates its strategy of programming opinionated, obviously partisan hosts rather than simply delivering news sans point of view, which is the territory CNN has staked out.
"This is a tremendous moment for MSNBC," said Griffin. "[CNN] has the best brand in television news. But we've got quality programming."
Matthews was quick to note that while many of MSNBC's hosts approach their programs from a certain side of the ideological divide ("We call it like we see it," he said), they are always "fact-based."
"There are a lot of programs on the air that are not fact-based. And I have a real problem with them," said Matthews. "We all know who they are. There's a new one on the air right now."
MSNBC also announced that it will begin telecasting in 1080i HD on June 29. The launch, said Griffin, was less about allowing viewers to see its cadre of personalities including new addition Ed Schultz, in HD, and more about getting MSNBC into the HD channel lineup with its cable news competitors.
"To me, it's about the neighborhood," he said. "[HD] is just about to hit critical mass and we've got to be there." The Ed Show launches April 6 at 6 p.m. displacing David Schuster's 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Shuster co-anchor a two-hour news program with Tamron Hall from 3-5 p.m. MSNBC has also shelved plans to develop at 10 p.m. program after Maddow's show and instead will continue to rerun Olbermann's Countdown, which has gained traction at 10 p.m. "There are night where a rerun of [Countdown] beats Anderson Cooper 360," said Griffin.
Matthews joked that the rerun of his show at 7 p.m. may be confusing to some of his viewers. "It's a topic of ongoing discussion," he said. "There are people who are confused and think they're watching [a new show]," he said. "But there are people who know they've seen it before. And those are the type of discerning viewers I'm looking for."

| Honest question:
Why do people want MSNBC (or CNN, or FoxNews) in HD? Its anchors sitting at a desk. HD enhances that experience?
There are other HD available channels that I'd much rather see added first (NHLNet, NBATV, ESPNNews, MTV, HDNet, etc.)

Notice that nobody else does this with their studio shows in their entirety (not the cable news channels, and not the RSNs, either; not even the ESPN channels). Does it look better, I'm certain it does. The question is, "Of all the channels available in HD, but not yet on Comcast, which one(s) provide the most visual improvement going to HD?" That's where maybe the cable news networks may not rate as high.

| Yeah, I live outside Philly, I have a bunch of HD news channels. There's no use for them.
Sports are more important for HD. You can see the puck, baseball, etc. more clearly. It's not to see the blades of grass on the field, it's to see the break of a curveball and understand why a batter swung and missed.
Not to mention the other channels I listed like HDNet, and someone else mentioned the Travel Channel which broadcast non-sports programming that actually takes advantage of HD clarity.
I have no idea why you would care how clearly you can see the makeup on the face of an anchor reading you the news. Or the wall behind them.

| Re: [HD] Msnbc HD coming to comcast in June? said by PGHammer :I was referring *specifically* to studio shows, as opposed to live events. When it comes to mechanics in that area, therre is NO difference between a sports program in HD and a news program in HD. (Example: "SportsCenter" vs. NBC Nightly News"). Most national sporting events (at least in the United States) *are* shot/shown in HD (even if nothing more than 720p); however, the same thing generally is NOT trrue of breaking national, let alone local, *news events* (even such practically-scripted events as the "State of the Union" address). While I'm a sports fan, why should news get short shrift, even compared to sports? Because, again, do I really benefit from seeing Senator X deliver a speech in HD?
Compared to watching replay of whether a football crossed the plane of the goal-line before his knee touched?
HD improves the viewing experience in the latter case, and is just a waste of bandwidth in the former.

| Re: [HD] Msnbc HD coming to comcast in June? Spoken like a true sports FANATIC.
That is what live coverage (and sports channels) are for.
However, for the local stations (and the news channels), HD is just as important (if not more important) as they don't HAVE live events drawing your sort of fan to bring advertiser money. If a local station DOES broadcast or tape live events, if they want HD cameras and such to cover them with, they have to do multiple duty. (That's called "real-world economics".)

I was talking about both (after all, the biggest source the two news channels have for coverage is the local NBC/FOX stations in the case of MSNBC/FNC, and CNN's own affiliates, largely ABC stations). Further, CNN had *already* launched an HD service, therefore, how much choice did MSNBC and FNC really have?
