Re: [HD] Msnbc HD coming to comcast in June?

Let's see if I get this straight...*sports* studio shows in HD, fine...*news* studio shows in HD, nyet?

If you want a good idea on how HD can be useful in news, hie thyself the NBC Nightly News - The HD NetShow

»nightly.msnbc.com

It's the same NBC Nightly News (lagged thirty minutes from the original telecast), and streamed in 1080i (as it has been from when NBC Nightly News first went HD). Notice that nobody else does this with their studio shows in their entirety (not the cable news channels, and not the RSNs, either; not even the ESPN channels).

Don't hate it until you watch it with your own eyeballs.

I have watched news in HD and SD. It a waste of a Hd channel to broadcast in hd.

I can think of many more visually stimulating channels I rather have in HD first, like the Travel Channel, cartoon network, and the Science Channel to name but a few. Couple that with the fact that test paterns get higher ratings then MSNBC leads me to ask why the mad rush to get the channel on Comcast in HD?

Yeah, I live outside Philly, I have a bunch of HD news channels. There's no use for them.

Sports are more important for HD. You can see the puck, baseball, etc. more clearly. It's not to see the blades of grass on the field, it's to see the break of a curveball and understand why a batter swung and missed.

Not to mention the other channels I listed like HDNet, and someone else mentioned the Travel Channel which broadcast non-sports programming that actually takes advantage of HD clarity.

I have no idea why you would care how clearly you can see the makeup on the face of an anchor reading you the news. Or the wall behind them.

So, opinions on the utility of HD on news stations aside....

I gather no one has an answer to the question of when MSNBC is slated to reach Comcast?

Does it look better, I'm certain it does. The question is, "Of all the channels available in HD, but not yet on Comcast, which one(s) provide the most visual improvement going to HD?" That's where maybe the cable news networks may not rate as high.

I was referring *specifically* to studio shows, as opposed to live events. When it comes to mechanics in that area, therre is NO difference between a sports program in HD and a news program in HD. (Example: "SportsCenter" vs. NBC Nightly News"). Most national sporting events (at least in the United States) *are* shot/shown in HD (even if nothing more than 720p); however, the same thing generally is NOT trrue of breaking national, let alone local, *news events* (even such practically-scripted events as the "State of the Union" address). While I'm a sports fan, why should news get short shrift, even compared to sports?

Because, again, do I really benefit from seeing Senator X deliver a speech in HD?

Compared to watching replay of whether a football crossed the plane of the goal-line before his knee touched?

HD improves the viewing experience in the latter case, and is just a waste of bandwidth in the former.

Spoken like a true sports FANATIC.

That is what live coverage (and sports channels) are for.

However, for the local stations (and the news channels), HD is just as important (if not more important) as they don't HAVE live events drawing your sort of fan to bring advertiser money. If a local station DOES broadcast or tape live events, if they want HD cameras and such to cover them with, they have to do multiple duty. (That's called "real-world economics".)

We're talking about CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC here.

Not your local NBC or Fox affiliate.

I was talking about both (after all, the biggest source the two news channels have for coverage is the local NBC/FOX stations in the case of MSNBC/FNC, and CNN's own affiliates, largely ABC stations). Further, CNN had *already* launched an HD service, therefore, how much choice did MSNBC and FNC really have?

I picked up MSNBCHD today,and i must say it's a joke.
At least it doesn't have ESPN bars, but it has tickers on top, bottom and a bigger one on the right side.
The picture its self is smaller then normal SD.
