Re: Most places make you pay for your own

There was only one place I worked where they paid for broadband. I'll give you a hint - the public is very angry at them right now.
Did you at least get your bonus before you left?

I work for a major retailer at their HQ and telecommute every other day for the last year. I pay for my own broadband and don't mind, since I consider it a perk not having to spend 90 minutes every day in traffic (more in the winter obviously). I have uverse and pay $35 for the access which compared to the gas, wear and tear on the car, my sanity and the extra time I get to spend with my kids is actually a very small price to pay. My company purchased a laptop for me though in order to do this. It definitely makes my family life happier, but I've noticed that I work more efficiently (no disruptions) and longer (too tempting just to answer a couple of emails after dinner) when I am at home. The temptation to slack off is there too obviously, but not a concern for me. I don't think working full time from home would be a good thing though, because the 'social/inter-personal' aspect of your work life does get lost.

Yeah sure we got bonuses. Not big bonuses like the CxOs but bonuses nonetheless.

They were spiraling down way before they started to get the attention they're getting now. Big layoffs in 2007 when I left and lots and lots of cost cutting. Remember that they were under investigation by the feds well before this mess happened. Because of that we had lots of record keeping to do to keep our noses clean - change management especially was enforced to a T, and no tapes could be destroyed/reused/recycled. Big pain in the neck. I'm sure the extra record keeping factored into their operating cost.

I think the best thing to happen to them would be for the Government to break them up into smaller chunks. Some of the companies like American General operated more or less independently anyway. They're way too big for their own good.

I work from home sometimes but my broadband is not paid for.

The only things they'll pay for are blackberry and EvDO cards/service. I'm not going to telecommute using an EvDO card. I'd rather use my 30Mbps DOCSIS3 connection.
