Bandwidth usage: share your experience under new rules.

I thought it'd be interesting to find out what happens if you go over your bandwidth cap for these first few months under the new bandwidth usage rules.

Please share your experiences. Note that this thread should be exclusively about what warnings / suspensions you get. There's another thread available if you want to comment on the new rules.

Just got this in the mail, don't think it really counts as a warning considering it's late about a week.

That's sad and disturbing that it takes a whole week from the day of the warning to receive the email.

because april and may, there are no overage charges...You'll only get cut off if you cause problems on the network..(ie..someone on your node calls in and complains of congestion, cogeco investigates, see's your over your limit...then they take action)

Re: Bandwidth usage: share your experience under new rules.

so your telling me that if i were to do all my downloading at lets say 1am - 6am i could go over as much as i want without any repercussions?

i'm not saying your a liar but you've gotta understand my skepticism. under the old system soho would have a hard cap of about 97gb. then you would be cut off.

its just weird why they would allow such overages especially since they've not started charging for it yet.

I've already gone over the previous hardcap for Standard by 35GB and I'm still around. The $30 we're going to be paying will make Cogeco a lot of money. While we pay $1.50-2.00 per GB, Cogeco is making at least 500% profit off of that alone - I'm thinking the new hardcap will be around 350GB in areas with low congestion, probably a lot lower in high density areas.

Re: Bandwidth usage: share your experience under new rules.

I content that the markup is in the neighbourhood of 10000%, if not greater (assuming the real cost is 1.5-2 cents/GB, and that's not even really true depending on time of day).

Jack Sparrow 5

@cgocable.net

wow!

i still can't believe you've downloaded that much. anyway to provide a screenshot of your selfcare page just to see the actual numbers ourselves. i guess im worried that if i go over my limit ill have my internet shut off.

if i can see your numbers for myself it would make me less hesitant to download without fear of being punished.

if you dont mind that is.

No worries, I didn't make this up, just quoting Krispy...

agreed...very weird, yet this is what's happening...It's stated very clearly on the new usage page..."Additional usage charges will be credited for the month of April and May."

I'm up to 128% usage, and just recieved my 85% warning :-/

In my experience, the moment we go over the cap, a couple of hours later we get kicked off.

Quite often, we won't download more than 10 MB over several days, and get kicked off again.

If their internal suspension policy doesn't change, then I suppose that will be a problem in my area. Here in Kingston it seems like all the nodes are oversubscribed... I can never reach the full capacity of the line due to conggestion. People are always complaining of poor speed, and cogeco seems agnostic as to whether X person who is 100.2% over his limit has only downloaded 10 MB in a week, they still cut you off.

To make matters worsse, bell only has one PoP in this town. No remotes. Unless your in the downtown core, DSL (and as such alternate ISPs) is not an option.

Although, at my girlfriends, we deal with 1.5Mbps DSL, because overall we get to download more than we could with cogeco. Plus, we're proividing some support for the CAIP

They have done that in the past... But as you've read, many people are over 300% bandwidth consumption and can keep on rolling.

Looks like this is there way of dealing with oversaturated nodes. Here in the Kingsville area, you're lucky to get over dialup speeds after six pm. I was told back in Feb they'd be dealing with this issue soon, I asked how soon, they said in two months!! Would have rather seen them increase capacity than screw over their customers.

I so miss the Shaw service I had back in BC.

hagbard: I do not believe there are any alerts presently for this type of problem in Kingsville (although this really belongs in some other thread) - I can take a look Monday night when I'm back in the office, if you want to pm your MAC

Gixxer: With all honesty, I had nothing to do with your cutoff, at some point it was inevitable IMO...

Re: Bandwidth usage: share your experience under new rules.

Feel free to send me an email. But if you look in earlier threads, there's been many who've said the same thing, they're dl speed drops around six pm. I was told by a dispatcher there was an issue with overloaded nodes in the area and was shocked when she thought three months was considered "a short time" to deal with it.

Just received the official letter from Cogeco today. I read the small print where it says: "... these additional charges and maximum limit do not limit in any way our contractual right to temporarily suspend or restrict your access to your internet service or to take any other actions deemed appropriate, if your consumption exceeds a reasonable limit, as determined by Cogeco in its sole judgment, or for any other violation of the AUP ..."

This indicates to me that cutoff doesn't need to be as a result of interference with other people's fair use, but rather can be strictly based on your use.

(bolding is mine, not Cogeco's)

So, are we supposed to be getting warning emails, or is that starting this month? I ask because I finally signed in to the new bandwith monitoring tool today. I'm at a ridiculously low number for this month (but likely valid as I haven't been around much).

However, I look at March's info and see that I hit 93% - definitely did not get a warning email. Frankly that's pretty much the same situation that first got me into trouble - no emails, then cut off.

Re: Bandwidth usage: share your experience under new rules.

Looks like your getting away with a lot and I would bet it's because it's a business account.

If you think you've gone over by 600% or more then that's 720Mb's worth of data and if they cut off the other gentleman at only 270Gb's then something is very wrong with this setup.
