Re: Bandwidth usage: share your experience under new rules.

Now take this opinion with a grain of salt since I just left Bell with some real horror stories about support, speed, and stability. I must not be an average user since I find the speed to be an almost constant 9.4 MB and after checking my useage over the past week, am averaging about 1 GB a day. Yes I download some torrents, but not on a consistent basis, and am an avid WoW player. With Bell I saw an average use rate around 35 GB a month.Maybe I just came from the absolute worse situation that my judgement is clouded so let's give it some time but at this point I can say that the caps are not a problem. And it would appear that all providers are going to caps now so in the future it appears that it is an unavoidable nuisance.

What makes you say that? Do you have a link to the news report stating this?

Once cogeco fails, what ISP in their right mind will go for this suicidal business model?

I pretty much stay under 100%. I did push my Soho (on purpose) over 85% last month just to make sure that I was getting messages (as I hadn't on another month I'd come close to 100%). I got the message, so that's good. I'm not usually much over the 85% mark (if that).

I think zip.ca got nervous as my spouse & I weren't using their service last month (due to our heavy downloading testing the meter).. They are sending us like 5 discs at a time now

I would like to switch to Cable, and Cogeco is the only option due to the horrible ISP choices in Canada, but my typical usage is 150GB to 170GB a month, and that's without doing anything illegal.

100GB is just too low of a cap to even consider switching. It's like giving someone a car that can do 160 MPH and then telling them they can only drive 5 miles a day.

Of course the reason they are doing these caps is because their main money making business is delivering overpriced cable television, and if people can watch TV online, it hurts that business. So they take away the option to watch TV online, thus, thinking it will help their cable TV business. It's backwards thinking, but all the American cable companies are doing the same.

It's backwards thinking like that that keeps North America far behind the rest of the world when it comes to technology. Corporate greed and governments that work for corporations keep us behind and it's only the people who suffer for this corporate greed.

I also didn't report last month but, I was able to to ~226GB without being disconnected.

Considering going on Business Starter Package this month.

these caps are a cash grab period. I WAS a HD cable subscriber, with their RENTAL DVR. The television was bombarded with FREE downloadable HD movies. Guess what! not only does the DVR/Cable TV system not warn about approaching or exceeding the cap, it just happily downloads while the meter is running.

My solution, since I felt Cogeco profiteers from us both ways, was to cancel the cable TV. If a reliable alternative offers no cap service in my area for internet, that account will be closed also.

Why in hell would the TV warn you about approaching/exceeding the cap? What TV cap? What meter?

I'm almost speechless...

I'm actually getting pretty worried that somehow I'll get cut off when I hit about 110% (which should be in the next few days), even though others seem to be getting away with a lot more.

Well looks like I'll be looking for alternatives or at least a second ISP in the form of some random DSL with no caps. With 4 computers sharing the same connection going through the cap is pretty easy. Without any torrents or excessive downloading doing 60GB is really easy. Facebook, youtube and other sites are pretty bandwidth intensive. Now if I wanted to get a new game off of steam or something like that I'd be stuck with extra charges as well. Games are no longer less than a GB some of them could be 10+GB of downloading since a lot of them are now online distribution mainly. I wouldn't be worried if it was say 300GB cap like some of the american ISP's have. It's not though so all it takes is one day of getting a game or heck even a movie online and the end of the month there will be an overage bill.

My use is well under the 60 GB limit and having switched from Bell, which also has limits, I guess I am used to it. However I can see how the average user could easily go over 60, it isn't hard and the limits seem too low to me as well. I usually average 35-40 a month and that is with online gaming, some bittorrent d/ls and as a beta tester downloading builds at various times. Maybe since I came from a miserable situation with Bell, Cogeco suits me well since the service is rock solid stable and fast all of the time. Still it would seem that 100-120 or so would be more realistic. I know that I could kick to the next level for 100 GB but an extra $25 a month is too much to pay for the extra 40 GB.

Bottom line is after Bell anything is a vast improvement limits and all.

I think it sucks. This hard cap is unrealistic, and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay overages. First overage charge will be my last, I'm canceling that day. How can they be gouging us 60gig for $55. If they don't come out with a 7M/100gig plan by the time my introductory pricing runs out in August, I'm ending my 10+ years of loyal Cogeco service. It's going to be hard to deal with the speed drop, but 200gig for $30 at techsavvy is much more attractive at this point. I watch CBC news and other streams daily. Combine that with some youtube vids and other live streams and I'm consistently around 59gig/mo (only because I have a bandwidth meter.) I don't need 10M speed, but the limits on the Lite packages are even more ridiculous. Screw this disgusting extortionate company. I really don't want to go, but they leave me no choice. This is my absolute promise, new higher gig tiers by August, or I'm gone.

Phew, I feel better now..sorry to vent.

7M/120gig: It's called the business starter package...but is a little bit more expensive and you cannot bundle it.
