Can't really blame anyone. Injuries destroyed this team. Over the last 3 years they have been a top 3 team in the NL. The collapse on the other hand imo is piss poor managing. Jerry Manual is not a great coach imo and Willie was way to laid back. Bring back Bobby V. I read he was not interested in coaching the team in Japan after this season. -- Mets, Cowboys, Devils |

| Thought this was amusing (from »www.boston.com/sports/baseball/r···a_bases/ ):
MARTINEZ IN THE CLUTCH (10:41, MID 8, 2-1 SOX) The Sox were two innings away from being shutout for three straight games for the first time since April 27-29, 1981. Now they're six outs from beating the Yankees and snapping a five-game skid, all thanks to one swing from Victory Martinez. He pounded a one-out, two-run home run over the leftfield fence, down the line.
Ellsbury struck out looking at a pitch on the outside corner. Pedroia ripped a single into left-center. Then came Martinez.
BARD COMES ON (10:44, MID 8, 2-1 SOX) Daniel Bard will protect the Red Sox' lead, facing pinch hitter Hideki Matsui, Jeter, and Damon. The Sox ended their inning when Bay grounded into a double play.
BACK-TO-BACK (10:51, BOT 8, 3-2 YANKS) Bard got the first two outs, then fell apart. Damon smoked a 1-0low, 98-mph fastball into the Yankees' bullpen in right-center, erasing the Sox' short-lived lead. Teixeira followed by launching a home into the upper deck in right. Yankee Stadium exploded. What a devastating loss this would be.
OKAJIMA REPLACES BARD (10:55, BOT 8, 3-2 YANKS) Bard lost it, walking A-Rod on five pitches. Terry Francona summoned Hideki Okajima to pitch to Jorge Posada.
YANKEES RALLYING (10:57, BOT 8, 3-2 YANKS) Suddenly, this game may be getting away from the Red Sox. Posada doubled into the rightfield corner, putting men on second and third for Swisher.
THERE WENT THE PENNANT? (11:02, BOT 8, 5-2 YANKS) Swisher squibbed a single through the middle, just past the dive of Nick Green. Both runs scored, and the Yankees have a three-run lead with Mariano Rivera throwing in the bullpen. This is a surreal and painful scene for the Red Sox. And now Cano singled into right. Two on, six straight base runners have reached with two outs.
TO THE NINTH (11:05, END 8, 5-2 YANKS) Cabrera grounded to Green to end the carnage. The Yankees ripped out the guts of the Red Sox, scoring four runs off of Bard and Okajima after Bard retired the inning's first two batters. And now "Enter Sandman" is playing. The sum of the past six days, if the Sox can't score three runs (that's a safe bet, no?), will be crushing.
YANKEES SWEEP SOX (11:18, END 9, 0-0) How will the Red Sox come back from these six games? They play Detroit at Fenway Park in less than 20 hours.
In the ninth, J.D. Drew singled to lead off the inning. Lowell lined out to right. Varitek struck out swinging after fouling off several pitches. David Ortiz pinch hit Nick Green, setting up a potentially dramatic moment given the weekend's background. Ortiz walked, and Chirs Woodward pinch ran for him. Ellsbury ended the game with a weak roller to first.
The Red Sox were swept by the Yankees and lost their sixth straight, a nosedive that has left them tied with the Texas Rangers for the wild card and 6 1/2 games behind the Yankees for first place in the American League East. Over the past week, the Red Sox lost a 13-inning game and a 15-inning game. Tonight's may have been just as painful. The Red Sox ended a 31-inning scoreless drought in the eighth inning when Victor Martinez hit a two-run homer that dramatically gave the Sox a 2-1 lead. After Daniel Bard retired the first two hitters he faced in the eighth, Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira each blasted massive home runs to give the Yankees the lead for good. -- ***ATMFAQ***DIFAQ***Kitchen Sink*** |

| reply to MuDvAyNe said by MuDvAyNe :How the hell can the Mets go out and trade Church to the Braves for Franceour! This deal makes no sense to me. I guess I will be seeing Franceour's debut tomorrow night lol! I can't see myself cheering for this guy. He is younger and has put up better numbers in the past than Church so in my opinion Franceour has a better upside. Too bad we didn't go for youth earlier. As I said when they first signed Sheffield, they guy would never make it through the season playing every day. He has missed how many games due to a cramp in his leg? Time to hang up the cleats or go back to the AL to DH. The Mets looked promising before the season but were certainly not a lock and adding a player who could not make it through the season was a mistake. It's not like Sheffield was the missing piece to winning it all. They looked for instant gratification on the cheap and hopefully learned that was a mistake. They still have some of their best players who have many years left (even though Reyes and Beltran seem to be soft) and should have built on the foundation.
As much as I hate to say it, the Yankees spent the money and got a nice return on investment. Mark Teixeira was a great pick up. The Mets could have used CC or Burnett and not wasted money on Ollie Perez. -- I'd rather be a free man in my grave than living as a puppet or a slave. | Franceour is not a patient hitter. I hate people who swing at everything. If the Giants did not have a 300 pound 3rd basemen he would of grounded out on one pitch in the bottom of the 9th today. Sure he is playing decent right now but Church was a doubles machine. -- Mets, Cowboys, Devils |

| reply to Straphanger It was only a matter if time before Gary Sheffield showed his true colors. He was put in the staring lineup yesterday and asked to be removed. He preferred to pout on the bench since the Mets would not talk about a contract extension. He's 40, was injured or had a cramp that lasted weeks, is a defensive liability in the outfield and was taken out twice in the last week in close games because of his lack of defense.
They should cut him today since he asked to be removed from the lineup. The Met season is already done. Let's hope he doesn't start throwing the ball into the stands like he did when the Brewers would not give him what he wanted. Every team he was on had an issue with him, when it came to contract time. -- I'd rather be a free man in my grave than living as a puppet or a slave. | Boy, you just have it full out for this guy, don't you? What's the big deal, especially considering the season is over? I'm surprised he lasted this long without bitching about playing time, and it's not like he bitched to the media about it. Considering the Mets have a severe lack of personnel right now, cutting him isnt exactly the brightest move. Ride out the season, don't resign him, and move on. Easy as pie. Gary Sheffield is about 10th on their list of problems. He also played for the Brewers nearly 20 years ago, so it's time to let go of that. Yeah, he's a jerk, but the Mets are paying him the frickin minimum, and he's given back 10 times that. -- You're so vain... I bet you think this post is about you. |

1 edit | said by jwersan :Yeah!! He has played QUITE well for a "washed up" player, as some call him. This season he has been involved in quite a few scoring opportunities that may not have happened without him.. So why did they pull him in close games twice this week if his bat is so potent? His defense is horrible. He doesn't cover ground and has a weak throwing arm. They were willing to sacrifice his bat to compensate for his poor outfield play in a tie game. Maybe he shoud have used the steroid cream he was proven to have used but denied knowing what it was to relieve the cramp in his leg that kept him out for weeks.
The Tigers were smart, they know he would pout since it was his contract year and they didn't need a cancer in the clubhouse. Who wants to root for a guy like this. He could be MVP and I still would not want him on my team. It's the same with Bonds. Not one team would sign him at the end because they knew he was poison in the club house.

| I've held off on posting this until now for a reason...
With all the injuries, and the loss of what was the entire starting lineup, save two players...
You have to give this team credit. With what most have called a second or third string team, they did not roll over and die, like some expected. They played some good baseball at times and are NOT in last place in their division, which is not saying much either.
I think the 2009 Mets deserve a lot of credit for playing through what I bet no other teams has ever had to deal with, and still managed to win quite a few games against teams that they should not have beaten.
Now for the obligatory statement.
Just you wait until NEXT season! -- RIAA/MPAA... Bite me!!!! In constant search for intelligent life on Earth! |
