I'd just like to say I went down finally to Citifield on Sept. 21 and the new stadium is FRIGGIN' AWESOME! The workers were all great as well. Kudos to all involved. Even though they got their asses kicked we had a great time.
It's really weird not seeing Shea there anymore though. I miss that place. |

| A few years ago I bet my friend that the Mets would win the World Series before the Yankees would. (A few years ago this bet looked kind of good) So now I have to root for those Phillies, but in the end I would probably root for them anyway since I have hated the Yankees a lot longer then I have hated the Phillies. -- Mets, Cowboys, Devils |

Anyway... I dont have this hate for the Phillies like most other Met fans do primarily for one reason. I have tremendous respect for how the Phillies built their organization the past 5 years. They had tremendous prospects in the farm system that developed into a trio of MVPs. They havent signed a super-blockbuster free agent by tossing around wads of undeserved cash. They took players that other teams cast off (Lidge, Ibanez) and turned them into pieces that helped them win at a bargain price. Their bench is unbelievably productive. I include Jayson Werth in that mix, because he was acquired to be a bench player. They held on to their top prospects in the Cliff Lee deal, and werent suckered into trading for Halladay. The Phillies are what the Mets should be. I can't fault a team for winning if they build their team the right way and play the game well. The Yankees, on the other hand, are just this mash of ridiculously high-salaried talent. Their 1-6 in the lineup makes over 10 million, with three of them making over 20 mil. Purely pathetic. There's no sense of front office ability when you can throw around that kind of cash. It's just easier to swallow 80 million dollars in mistakes (Pavano and Igawa). -- You're so vain... I bet you think this post is about you. |

There's no sense of front office ability when you can throw around that kind of cash. It's just easier to swallow 80 million dollars in mistakes (Pavano and Igawa). I am a Met fan but the Steinbrenners are the best owners in this town. The Wilpons and Dolans are clowns. Spending money doesn't guarantee anything. Look at the Knick payroll. They spend as much or more than any team and have just about the worst team in the league. When was the last time the Yankees won the series despite what they spent? This time they spent wisely. Teixeira and Sabathia were great additions despite the cost. Many Met fans thought Gary Sheffield was a good addition. You get what you pay for in this case, a malcontent who was not young or healthy enough to play everyday. They overspent on Perez. He is a stiff.
The Mets are not a low payroll club. They also spend like drunken sailors. Comparing the Mets infield to the Yankees infield is laughable. They are a distant second at evry position. Delgado vs Teixeira, Cano vs Castillo, Reyes vs Jeter, Wright vs A-Rod and Posada against any Met catcher. The Yankees simply blow them away. All the crap about A-Rod is silly. Yes he took steroids and I don't condone it in any way but he will put up some of the best numbers of any player to have ever played. He won the MVP 3 times. No current Met has one MVP. The choke label is going away. A-Rod is having a great post season and carried the Yankees for part of the year.
The only place you can make a case for the Mets vs the Yankees is center field but Beltran is soft. I don't care how good he is when he plays, the bottom line is he misses a great deal of time to injuries and doesn't play through pain.
Yankee starting pitching vs Met starting pitching. Again no contest. Bullpen? Rivera vs anybody is not a fair comparison. He is in a class by himself.
The core of the Yankees for may years was home grown. They just added to what they had. Petite, Jeter, Rivera, Williams and Posada are a few who came up from their farm system and brought them several World Series.
Too may Met fans are green with envy. Let's be thankful NYC has at least one team in the World Series. Go Yankees!!! -- I'd rather be a free man in my grave than living as a puppet or a slave. Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely |

I don't hate the Phillies, though I very much dislike their fans. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I'm primarily surrounded by Yankee fans here anyhow. Therefore, go Phils! The only reason I may dislike some of the Phillies players is because they're not Mets. They're the kind of players you don't like when they're on the other team, but would love if they were on your favorite team.
As far as the Mets go, the Phillies certainly are what the Mets ought to be. They too have a pretty decent payroll but they spend money so much smarter.
Also, in regards to the Sheffield situation, he came free for the Mets and at the end of spring training. He blocked nobody from a job. He should not have been necessary as the Mets should have signed either Ibanez/Dunn or to a lesser extent, Abreu. Now there are awful free agent options (unless Jason Bay's demands aren't ridiculous). I would NOT waste a ton of money on Matt Holliday just because he's a king amongst a weak FA class. If anything, John Lackey would be a MUCH better investment. -- 1010011010 - The Number of the Beast |
