I'm not sure if you buyout Bradley yet. He is doing his job now .400+ OBP batting .277, yes the RBI's are low but you can't get RBI's when the guys in front of you are clearing the bases or are not getting on. I take him into next year and re-evaluate at the AS break. I leave him batting 2nd though he seems to be doing excellent in that spot.

You could also trade off everything else you have. Lee, Ramirez, Zambrano and get some top of the line prospects and get them in the line-up or after a few more years in the minors. As they get to their potential you give them the larger contract, the ones that don't pan out you trade or let go. Then take some of the extra money and make that big free agent signing to put the club over the top.

Ricketts will have the money to do this he could use the money he saves at the beginning to rehab Wrigley and then afterward he'll have money to pay the larger contracts.

This plan will take 4-5 years most likely but it should work.

What makes this work over the way that Pittsburgh, KC, Florida and others that do this is the fact that the Cubs have a large market and the money will be there, where as Pittsburgh and the others don't have the money to make that big signing or to keep their players when they reach their potential.

I think the pitching has been our bright spot... It is so hard pitching with these one and two run leads we had all year... You can't relax, every hitter is the potential tying or winning run... Yes, Marmol and Gregg have not played well and Rothschild looks like he didn't do his job...

I strongly disagree. You never know what a pitcher is going to do year to year. He might have went to Colorado and the pitching coach might have seen something that Rothschild didn't and fixed it.
Marquis could easily had lost 13 games as a starter for the Cubs this year, especially with our offense.

Soriano at lead off would be more of a coaching issue I would think, but there are a lot of rumors of promises made to Soriano to lure him into town. At the time we made that deal, everyone knew it was a heavy contract. Part of what you deal with when you snag the top free agent of the time (which Soriano was when we signed him).

Add in that if he wins NL MVP then he will get the full amount of his original contract for that year.
Push the contract in front of him and say sign it or go battle with Gregg and Miles for position in the unemployment line.

5. Inform players that if one thing that can void their contracts happen then consider the contract over and void.

SAN DIEGO - Lou Piniella has finally seen enough.

After Kevin Gregg gave up four two-out runs in the ninth inning in a 4-1 loss to the Padres on Monday night, Piniella said he plans on removing Gregg from the closer's role.

"I think we're going to make some changes as far as what we're going to do in late innings," Piniella said. "We'll have some more tomorrow."

Piniella didn't say who would be his new closer, though Carlos Marmol and Angel Guzman are considered the likeliest candidates.

Just listened to Theriot on WGN and they were talking about the play in Colorado where he almost didn't score.
Kaplan told him about Brenley calling him out for not hustling and Theriot basically said I don't care what he says I did my job and I scored. He also said that he didn't get any lecture about it.

I call BS because just after it happened you could easily read Lou's lips and him saying "You have to run those out." to Theriot. You could also see that Quade was telling him to run as he rounded 3rd.

I personally think Theriot is avoiding the blame and giving the I didn't do anything wrong defense. I also believe Brenley was 100% correct. When I played ball and coached if you didn't run those types of plays out you got benched. Maybe Bradley shouldn't have tried to stretch it out to a double but as soon as Theriot seen that he was he has to run hard.

Major League Baseball is considering disciplinary action against Houston reliever LaTroy Hawkins for questioning the integrity of plate umpire Mike Everitt after Monday night's game at Wrigley Field.

Hawkins claimed Everitt "wanted" the Cubs to win the game, a charge that MLB does not take lightly.

It all began when Everitt ejected Hawkins in the eighth inning after he disputed a called ball to Aramis Ramirez and continued to complain after Everitt ordered him to "knock it off." After the game, which the Cubs won 5-1 on Alfonso Soriano's walk-off grand slam in the 13th inning, Hawkins sounded off.

"Maybe he was having a bad day," Hawkins said. "I thought he had determined who he wanted to win the game anyway."

Asked about the comment before Tuesday's game, Everitt told the Tribune: "It's under investigation [by MLB], and we have no comment."

My vote is yes, take the hit on defense for his bat. Lou waited to long to give Fox his shot at playing third and now is doing the same with the catcher position.

I have to pay attention to the games on ESPN Gamecast. When it showed he had a hit and the field cleared it hadn't shown how the run scored. I looked at where the pitch was and could see it was down in his power zone, then the big 5 popped up and they showed the ball go out to center.

One that comes to mind the most was his Cubs debut against SF had a 7-0 lead going into the 7th he leaves game and BP blows it I think the Cubs lost in extra.

2008 89 K 30 BB 1.77 ERA
2009 104 K 38 BB 4.55 ERA

His biggest problem this year is the HR. He has had better 2nd halves than first. So this could be really good for us down the stretch. He has been the best since the AS break 2-0 in 3 starts the one ND was the 13 inning game in Philly 1 ER in 7 innings that night.

I don't understand how Harden gets charged with an Earned Run in the 6th. Morgan had a single and stole 2nd but the Error led to him scoring on the ground out since there was no more hits in the inning I think it should be un-earned.

True, the rule makes no sense... Why should the batter be awarded a hit for hitting most likely an easy ground out... The poor pitcher looses his no hitter...

There is the Jackie Robinson rule, which is somewhat the same... Jackie would get hit on purpose on a ground ball hit to 2nd base ... Instead of a DP Jackie is out and batter is awarded 1st ... No DP.. That was changed in the late 40's...

Yes it will cancel the hit because the fielder could have thrown to first and got the out that way. The official scorer has final decision though if it was a tough play then the batter can still be awarded the hit if he feels that the out at first couldn't have been made.

What's even worst this is best (starting) pitching I've seen in years and the worst hitting I've also seen in years... Loses in the last week, 2 - 1, 2 -1, 1- 0 and lost 5 games by 2 runs (last two wks) or less...

Hindsight is 20/20. At the time he pulled him, it looks like the right call to make. Our problem has more to do with a lot of bad pitchers in our bullpen. Cotts is a bust. Heilmann is a bust. Gregg is a bust.

Hendry rolled the dice on some players in the pen, and in the field. Last year we all knew we needed a left handed bat. He got the best one out there...and he's been a bust so far as well. 1. Marmol should have been closer from the get go. I think it showed a lack of confidence in him when Lou made him setup again. He earned the spot the last few years and just because the Cubs trade for Gregg and he has a good spring training doesn't mean he should be the closer.

2. Lou not leaving Wells in long enough. This kid has proven that he can get major league hitters out. Why does he continue to yank him just because somebody gets a hit? I think he should be easily 4-0 this year if his manager showed some confidence in the kid.

3. Cotts... Nuff said

4. Lou not going out and slapping Z up side the head when he gets all temperamental on the mound.

5. Soto sit his ass until 20 pounds of it have disappeared. He hasn't been able to throw his hitting sucks this year and K. Hill has looked much better.

This is just my top 5, I could probably name more but will leave it at here.

The 20-1 loss might have been a little of it but why would a player want to go from a team that lost 100 games to a team that is on their way in that direction. This was an attempt by KW to cover his ass after going out and getting Colon and keeping Contraras and not doing anything to improve the team from last year.

We know it had nothing to do with Chicago because Peavy had said he would allow a trade to the Cubs back in the off season.

A few years ago Guillen made Knerko the team captain. he's a lot like lee - quiet and non-demonstrative. So it isn't clear what makes a difference.

Now - if a team starts out like the highly touted Tigers did last season, you have a problem. but if you are hovering around .500 as both the Sox and the Cubs are right now, you are fine.

Plenty of time to break out. Or, in the case of the Sox, who are in a tight division, to fight it out till the end.

Also, I always said I got no problems with the guys production at the plate. He had some "laziness" incidents several years ago that irritated me. Yesterday Soriano had one where somebody hit one by the line and he was just sort of loafing his way out to get it. I still like Soriano, just get irritated when he doesn't hustle at one of the 7 or 8 balls he has to field in a game. Ordinarily I wouldn't buy the "caner to the team" stuff either, but most of the time it originates from their own teammates. If it's just one, not a big deal. If it's a chorus then I have to think there is an issue there. I remember my father before he passed would turn off the TV in the 9th, he couldn't take it... I'm almost getting there myself... ;) ...

They were battling for the closer spot in spring training. I remember hearing Lou on the radio when he gave the job to gregg b/c he liked what he saw. I didn't see any spring training games so I don't know who he faced.
