[help] IP changed many times today

AT&T usually gives me an ip that stays constant until I reboot my router. Since I rarely do this, I usually keep an ip for many days.

But today, I've seen the ip change at least 10 times. Probably many more since I'm not always watching.

What's going on? Is AT&T doing some configuration work? Or is this the way it's going to be from now on? Why?

Thanks for your feedback,

FF

Hi,

I'm noticing the same thing happening in Southbury, CT. IP changing every 2-3 hours. At one point it changed every 15 mins.

Whats going on???

Hi,

Today it seems back to normal.

I'd just like to know what was going on purely out of curiosity.

If your modem keeps a log it may have some clues
You may be able to see if a loss sync or the PPPoE session going down is the cause of the ip changes.

Currently the Motorola 2200 modem does the PPPoE, i'll check the logs and see if it was loosing the session.

Does a PPPoE login always result in a new IP?

If I enable bridge mode (or PPPoE passthrough) on the modem and enable PPPoE on my firewall will this help?

Thanks

It depends....... if the PPPoE server is ending the session there is nothing you can do about that
If the modem is ending the PPPoE session letting the router do the PPPoE may help

It looks like I spoke too soon. It started doing again tonight.

My modem is in bridge mode and my router does the pppoe authentication. There is no indication of the ip change in the router's logs.

AT&T, if you're listening (probably not), please explain what's going on.

It is fine up here in Windsor. My log shows getting my IP address on 3/20. Mebbe something in the southern parts.

Been a little flaky here in Bristol the last few days. Get a green blinking Internet light and green blinking activity light. Have to turn modem off then on again and it finally syncs up. Have had a couple IP changes also. I guess they are screwing around with something.

Here we go again!

It had been stable for a while but starting yesterday my IP is changing frequently.

WTF is going on? Is there anyone from Ma Bell on this forum? Can you give us some insight?

Thanks,

FF

Can't offer any help on an explanation for why you are seeing changes. If it isn't a flaky connection due to line quality, it would be hard to diagnose. OTOH, if you are not seeing any issues, other than relying on a constant IP address, don't. Rely on constancy. Your connection is a dynamic IP address, and the only way to use a dynamic IP connection reliably for servers, is to sign up for a dynamic DNS service.

Hi,

It's not a flaky connection and other subscribers have reported the same issue.

I DO use a dynamic dns service; but when the ip changes ever 10 minutes or so it creates severe problems. IP's are generally cached at the other end so an update to the dynamic dns service may not help.

If it wasn't for the span of time since your first post, I'd wonder if they were conditioning the lines for Uverse. But you've had the problem for a month and a half? That would be a stretch for such an explanation. Can you figure out if the other reporters are on the same DSLAM, or aggregation router?

Hi,

The first episode occurred in early April and lasted for a few days. It then went back to normal.

Now, in middle May, it's started again.

It hasn't been a continuous thing.

Thanks for your feedback,

FF

It's back again. Seems to be every 10 to 15 minutes but that's just a hunch.

The issue had cleared up for a while but not it's back with a vengeance.

Can anyone explain this?

Thanks,

PP
