[WIN7] Moving from Windows 7 Beta to Windows 7 RC

quote:
Moving from Windows 7 Beta to Windows 7 RC
...
Engineering Windows 7
Welcome to our blog dedicated to the engineering of Microsoft Windows 7

...

We’ve also learned that many of you (millions) are running Windows 7 Beta full time. You’re anxious for a refresh. You’ve installed all your applications. You’ve configured and customized the system. You would love to get the RC and quickly upgrade to it from Beta. The RC, however, is about getting breadth coverage to validate the product in real-world scenarios. As a result, we want to encourage you to revert to a Vista image and upgrade or to do a clean install, rather than upgrade the existing Beta.
...
The supported upgrade scenario is from Windows Vista to Windows 7.

...

Here’s what you can do to bypass the check for pre-release upgrade IF YOU REALLY REALLY NEED TO:

• Download the ISO as you did previously and burn the ISO to a DVD.
• Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive or a directory on any partition on the machine running the pre-release build).
• Browse to the sources directory.
• Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.
• Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7100 to 7000 (pictured below).
• Save the file in place with the same name.
• Run setup like you would normally from this modified copy of the image and the version check will be bypassed.
...
These same steps will be required as we transition from the RC milestone to the RTM milestone.
...

I am happy because "You’ve installed all your applications. You’ve configured and customized the system. What a friggin pain. I was hoping to just be able to upgrade, which I know I should be able to but I really don't want to waste the time to downgrade in order to upgrade again.

My Beta is running beautifully as is. I hate to give it up by downgrading to Vista at this point in order to upgrade again.

You should not download Windows 7 beta then, if you aren't going to test it. Wait for the retail release.

Some people will never learn what a Beta truly is. And these people are the first to complain it seems...

Why on earth would Microsoft waste their time creating an "upgrade" path from one Beta to the next????

Did you just happen to overlook the text in the lower right of your desktop "For testing purposes only"

You can upgrade from one beta to the next beta. I've upgraded from Build 7000 to 7022 to 7057 to 7068. I will certainly try upgrading it to the official RC when it comes out.

Same here, 7000 to 7022 to 7057 to 7068 to 7077. I will test the install on a different PC, but I will simply upgrade this one to 7100/7150. (whatever the final RC build will be.) I believe by simply using this system every day through all of these upgrade installs, all the programs that are installed, and using it day in and day out as a production based system is certainly beta testing in it's own right.

I do understand what MS would like to see though, issues in the installer - the main reason I will upgrade my vista box to the RC.

Actually, I do fully understand the ramifications and what a BETA truly is. You would just think by now, with all of the positive buzz and such, migrating/upgrading would be easier for those of us willing to try.

Again, I believe there will be an upgrade "path" but it sounds like MS is back pedaling just a wee bit.

I will try to upgrade to the official RC when it comes out. After all, I DID upgrade from Vista to Win7 Beta without a hitch (not a clean install).

Win7 Beta runs beautifully. I have not had one problem in 3 months!

I was just hoping MS was taking these comments and feedback seriously which would include smoother upgrade paths for those who are helping them in their BETA.
Again, I am more than happy with the current state of Win7 and would even pay for it!

Do a clean install. That should be a non-issue since you're (hopefully) testing and/or evaluating the beta/RC.

Yep I was just wondering if it could be done. Clean install is the last option...

I followed the instructions of the OP and when I looked at the cversion.ini file the MinClient was already 7077.0, not 7100 as it is supposed to be. Obviously I don't have a version direct from Microsoft on this date but I'm confident that I have the real thing from the reliability of the source and, more importantly, because the hash matches the officially reported hashes on Softpedia and other sites. Could Microsoft have changed this at the last minute? Anyone else take a look at theirs?

By the way, I'm talking about x86 version.

Yes. Same deal.

But I simply edited the MinClient value to 7000 and saved the file. I then ran setup and proceed to do an upgrade from 7000 with no problem.

Cool. So you upgraded from Beta to RC? I plan on doing the same when it is released. I plan on using a rewritable DVD to boot from with the changed MinClient value. Will also try to create a bootable USB flash drive. My C partition has the emergency Vista recovery on it and I don't want to blow that away. Or, can I copy that partition recovery info to an external drive and replace it on the C partition with the corrected Win7 ISO file?

Yes, I upgraded from Beta to RC using the directions posted by Kabanos See Profile. I burned the .iso to a DVD; copied the entire contents of the DVD to a directory on my Win7 Beta hard drive; edited cviersion.ini with Notepad setting the MinClient value to 7000; and then ran setup.exe from the folder on my hard drive where the files from the DVD were.

The upgrade took about an hour on my Dell D620 Lattitude. The only glitch I had was I had to uninstall Eset Smart Suite and start over after that.

I have no opinion about trying to save your original C partiion. I went the safter (IMHO)route of playing with Win 7 for testing purposes on a spare hard drive. When I want to run Win 7 I plug in that drive. When I need to use my machine for work specific stuff I plug the original drive back in and go back to Win XP.

Was successful upgrading from 7077 to 7100 and, again, didn't even have to change the cversion.ini as mentioned in my previous post. Had to re-remove the arrows and watermark and reactivate--otherwise looks ok.

jefe,

XP to WIN 7 and back.

Wow do you need to take special medication to keep from going whack-O?

It is bad enough that my Laptops are XP and my DeskTops are Vista.

I personally will be glad when Win-7 goes public, so I can have all my machine the same. This back and forth is starting to get confusing.

PS - I was almost to the point that I didn't need to ask for outside help to fix my XP machines when they decided to take a dump. Some how (cough) Vista slipped thru and now I am staring at Windows 7. Jefe, please tell me that you think "7" is going to be worth the effort. I am not exactly picking on Vista but it is one of the bigger disappointments I have had from M$, save the fact that they remove animated gifs from my Outlook 2007. What fun is e-mail without a little animated humor - all business - Yuk!

Do we still have to wait for 7 RC unless we have some premium level subscription or qualifications with MSFT?

MSDN and Technet will have access 4/30. Public availability begins 5/5.

HolmanGT....

It too am looking forward to the retail & OEM release of Win 7. I've been wanting to upgrade my hardware, a couple of desktop machines and a laptop or two, and I was hoping to wait until the retail and OEM version of Win 7 are released. Looks like I'm going to make it.

In the mean time I'm just playing. I haven't seen anything in Win 7 that puts me off. I've found the best special medication to alleviate migration woes comes from Kentucky and is made in kegs.

Good luck.

IZY,

Thanks for the time table tip. As impatient as I am, I believe I can wait until the 5th... "maybe"

@Jefe,

I am glad to see I am not the only one looking forward to something new, user friendly, with a few new tricks up its sleeve and stable. You know, all the things they said we would get with Vista.
Oh one other thing jefe, before my folks decided I should retire and come to Utah to help out in their old age I was working in Kentucky for Corning Glass for about six years and had to drive by the warehouses that they stored those oak barrels in for aging. I kept telling them I would work for free a taster but no dice, seems they had more volunteers than they knew what to do with. Oh surprise, surprise.
