| Before you can run the client, it needs to be configured with the username you intend to use on Stanford's servers and, if desired, a team number. (Team Helix is team 4, if you wish to join the local team.) Other options are more or less default, but tweakable. Others will point you, I expect, to a FAQ outlining the process.
I suggest creating two shortcuts, one for configuration purposes, and one for starting the client after configuration. I placed the client in C:\FAH; obviously you need to navigate to your program directory. My shortcuts:
For configuration only
You _must_ start the SMP client with the -smp flag, others are optional
the rest of the command line to start the client

| Made the shortcut to C:\Users\Mike46360\FAH\fah6.exe.exe -smp
Not sure why it added 2 .exe? But I get this when I click on the shortcut to the program^^ -- »www.ps3grid.net

| Re: Need help installing SMP F@H The 2 .exe entries should not matter. Windows will only use the last extension of .exe. But, some AV software might complain about it.
But, I think that it is that way, because you have your extensions hidden by default. So, when you re-named the original folding executable (should have been folding@home-WinXX-x86.exe, or in your case you would have seen something like folding@home-WinXX-x86), you must have typed in fah6.exe, not realizing that the .exe was really there already, just hidden.
Enable the Display of File Extensions in Vista:
NOTE: If you show/un-hide file extensions, you need to remember that when you go to rename a file, that you only change the part BEFORE the file extension shown.
IE.... A file called folding.exe, you would only change the part before the .exe. Something like fahwhatever.exe. If you remove the extension of any file, Windows will NOT know what it is, or what to open it with.
Also remember, if you rename a file, you will have to re-create any shortcut to that file.
Although, I also think that you are having some sort of file permission issues as well. Vista is good about that. It looks to me like your client is not able to write the files that it needs to.. IE... client.cfg or FAHlog.txt.
Can you see those two files?
If not, check your folding directories and make sure that they have the correct permissions for the user that you installed the client files under. And that you are in fact, starting the client using the user account credentials (user and password) that you installed the client under.

| Re: Need help installing SMP F@H You can't delete the file because it is in use. You would need to stop the smpd service first.
With Vista.. Having user "Admin" rights, is not the same as running as ADMINISTRATOR.
It is best to install the SMP client stuff while logged into the actual ADMINISTRATOR account. Or at least make sure that you install, and run everything with the actual ADMINISTRATOR credentials.
The ADMINISTRATOR account IS there, you just can't see it by default. It is like the ROOT account in *nix flavored OS's.
Read the guides carefully. I believe that they mention that you have to run the install.bat file by right clicking on it, and selecting "Run As: ADMINISTRATOR". Likewise, do the same when you start the fah6.exe. I think that you can setup the shortcut to do this for you automatically. But I don't have a Visa OS here (for obvious reasons), so I can't confirm that.

The shortcut for .exe has 2 .exe near the end, I don't know if that's causing it or what. -- »www.ps3grid.net

| Re: Need help installing SMP F@H If I knew where you were stuck, I could help.
Sorry, no MSN Messenger here. Not sure about remote assistance through it.. If it even would give enough access to be of any help. I suppose that I could go and get it, but I am more used to LogMeIn to help remote clients. And they can actually control/see what I am doing and when.
Let me go look at MSN Messenger. I will get back with you tomorrow sometime, if you want.

1 edit | Re: Need help installing SMP F@H Yes, thank-you for trying to help me here MsterBlstr.
I suggested MSN Messenger because that was the only app I knew that another person from the net could control my computer (with me being able to see what's going on)
I can install that program you use..if its free and easy? If it doesn't matter..just tell me what email you used for MSN Messenger and I can add you, and we'll go from there. (You can PM me if you want over dslr) -- »www.ps3grid.net

| Re: Need help installing SMP F@H Just wanted to add that he figured it out for me through msn messenger. and that its crunching away.
I did see last night on the Stanford website that they *recommend* you run the SMP client with a quad core..which I only have a dual core, but I don't plan to fold forever with the SMP client ..hopefully a new PSU and a Geforce GTS 250 will be in my near future. -- »www.ps3grid.net

| If you add the ETA to how long ago it was downloaded, you get about 2 days to complete. That is if you leave the client running 24/7. And depends also on what else you have going on with the computer.
6 days is the deadline on that one. So, you have a bit of play. Just not as much as you would with the uni client WU's.
