| reply to ztmike Re: Need help installing SMP F@H
Made the shortcut to C:\Users\Mike46360\FAH\fah6.exe.exe -smp
Not sure why it added 2 .exe? But I get this when I click on the shortcut to the program^^ -- »www.ps3grid.net |

| The 2 .exe entries should not matter. Windows will only use the last extension of .exe. But, some AV software might complain about it.
But, I think that it is that way, because you have your extensions hidden by default. So, when you re-named the original folding executable (should have been folding@home-WinXX-x86.exe, or in your case you would have seen something like folding@home-WinXX-x86), you must have typed in fah6.exe, not realizing that the .exe was really there already, just hidden.
Enable the Display of File Extensions in Vista:
NOTE: If you show/un-hide file extensions, you need to remember that when you go to rename a file, that you only change the part BEFORE the file extension shown.
IE.... A file called folding.exe, you would only change the part before the .exe. Something like fahwhatever.exe. If you remove the extension of any file, Windows will NOT know what it is, or what to open it with.
Also remember, if you rename a file, you will have to re-create any shortcut to that file.
Although, I also think that you are having some sort of file permission issues as well. Vista is good about that. It looks to me like your client is not able to write the files that it needs to.. IE... client.cfg or FAHlog.txt.
Can you see those two files?
If not, check your folding directories and make sure that they have the correct permissions for the user that you installed the client files under. And that you are in fact, starting the client using the user account credentials (user and password) that you installed the client under. |

| You can't delete the file because it is in use. You would need to stop the smpd service first.
With Vista.. Having user "Admin" rights, is not the same as running as ADMINISTRATOR.
It is best to install the SMP client stuff while logged into the actual ADMINISTRATOR account. Or at least make sure that you install, and run everything with the actual ADMINISTRATOR credentials.
The ADMINISTRATOR account IS there, you just can't see it by default. It is like the ROOT account in *nix flavored OS's.
Read the guides carefully. I believe that they mention that you have to run the install.bat file by right clicking on it, and selecting "Run As: ADMINISTRATOR". Likewise, do the same when you start the fah6.exe. I think that you can setup the shortcut to do this for you automatically. But I don't have a Visa OS here (for obvious reasons), so I can't confirm that. |
