| Getting bad hops in World of Warcraft out of Evansville
Since Tuesday, I have not been able to play this game reliably because of high latency and frequent disconnects. I'm not sure if there's anything I can do about it other than wait it out and see if it gets better. This happened a couple of years ago to me also and it lasted for about 2 weeks then everything was fine.
I've done all the requisite rebooting of my equipment, making sure all drivers/firmware is up to date on modem, network card, and router. I've even bypassed the router and connected directly to the cable modem and still have the problem.
After getting disconnected from the game just now, I ran a trace route to the World of Warcraft logon servers and this is what I got.

As you can see - the 14th hop at ATT in LA is the problem.
Is there anything at all I can do about this? Can I call WoW (my cable company, not the game) and ask if they'll route me a different way? Or is that something that isn't feasible? |

| I don't think Wide Open West can do anything about this problem. The issues appears outside of their peering partners (sprintlink in this case).
Contact the WoW (World of Warcraft) server admin to let them know of the problem. Or, if you have patience contact ATT which is who owns mdf001c7613r0003-gig-10-1.lax1.attens.net. Good luck getting them (ATT) to even understand how you know it's their issue though. Their status page hasn't been updated since 2006. »attens.net/ |

| I contacted the World of Warcraft admin and he had me do different trace routes directly to the server I play on. My previous trace routes were only to the login server, which authenticates you, then sends you on the realm where you actually play.
The trace routes to the servers themselves didn't show any problems. Nothing at all over 300ms on any of the hops, though the Sprintlink hops were the highest of them all. Its very hard to catch the problem when it happens because its so random. I might be able to play 20-30 minute or more, maybe even an hour and not have it happen, OR it may happen every 5 minutes for a half hour straight. I try to do trace routes when it happens but the high latency goes away quickly and if I disconnect from the server, its too late to do a trace route at that point.
Its really got me stumped and frustrated because its been going on since last Tuesday. |

| I'm still having the problem. I changed routers, and ran it for a couple of days straight from the cable modem to the PC and its still happening.
WoW techinician came out to my house today and checked everything and swapped out my cable modem. And... its still happening. Getting high latency, long lag spikes, and disconnects, not only in World of Warcraft, but on Xbox Live as well. My wife can't play a game of UNO on Xbox Live without getting dropped from the room. Again.. its just very random when it happens, but its guaranteed to happen at some point. Might be 10 minutes, 20 minutes, every 5 minutes, etc.
The WoW tech said he had a call just like mine a few days ago in Newburgh, which is where I'm located also, and the person had the exact same problem, so he's not sure if its a trend or something isolated in my area.
My speeds are good, but anything that requires me to have a lengthy connection for an extended period of time, such as an online game, is terrible.
Whatever is going on, my internet connection has not been the same since Tuesday April 7th. |

@wideopenwest.com | I live in Newburgh also and am having the exact same problem. I can't play anything related to blizzard without lag spikes and timeouts. |

| Just curious, but do you have any problems with your modem losing connection and then reconnecting? I had a tech out here last weekend and he said he fixed it but it still happens all the time. I also know several other people here in Newburgh that play World of Warcraft and are having a bad time too. |

@wideopenwest.com | No my modem stays connected. The tech swapped out my modem with a brand spanking new one on Friday and I still have the problem. |

| Oh I also talked to someone else in Newburgh who is having the exact same problem.
At this point, I don't think its a coincidence.
I'm calling WOW tomorrow and they better fix this. I'm out of patience. Its been almost 2 weeks now. Its not something at the user end or the operational level. Its something that they're doing routing us internally from their end, or something wrong with their equipment. They keep logs on everything they've done and whatever they did on April 7th screwed my connection up so they need to start there when looking at what the problem is. |

It's so random, I played tonight for 3 hours with no problems... then I get dropped twice in 15 minutes. |

1 edit | reply to BM Hey Bon, I'm probably the person that the wow tech told you about. I'm over by the central library they just built and they've been over here about 10 times. My problem when i play any game, especially WOW is that it goes all the way down to just the power light and downstream light and attempts to work its way back up which means my Upstream is what's crashing . I have the 15MB down and 2MB up and is very frustrating, i feel your pain. |

| reply to BM I think i might have found the solution to our problems in Newburgh, I ran several tracerts tonight and it appears from what i've been able to track IP wise, they run our connection to chicago, out to virginia, to kansas city, to virginia, back to kansas city, back to virginia, and then to a server you would like to go to. can you say bad routing or what! |

Is there anything at all I can do about this? Can I call WoW (my cable company, not the game) and ask if they'll route me a different way? Or is that something that isn't feasible? Blizzard Entertainment is hosted by AT&T Worldnet Services: Your route is controlled by their BGP announcements. Your ISP apparently peers with Sprintlink. I am not sure that getting them to change their peering is feasible; and it might make other things worse if they did.
FWIW, your troubled hop also shows up in my trace route; but without any appreciable latency: I have no clue why that would be. But the troubled link is beyond the Wide Open West network.
