1 edit | Is there a way to see how much bandwidth is used per month?
Hello.
Is there a way to find out how much bandwidth is used per week/month with RR? I know one can do by configuring computers and router, but that is complex especially if there are multiple home computers and portable devices (e.g. iPod Touch).
Thank you in advance. |

| reply to antdude There are tools out there for PCs and Macs that you can use to log an individual PC's data usage. For network wide countings, a router flashed with something such as Tomato or DD-WRT should do the trick other than the fact that the usage info may only be stored in RAM which is erased every boot. Smoothwall is a great way to go down as well if you have a spare PC around and want to get your hands dirty in reworking your network |

I was hoping I could get the datas at the single connection (cable). I am currently using an old Linksys BEFSX41 v1 router behind an Ambit U10C018 cable modem. |

DU Meter is a software. I would have to run on ALL computers, portable devices (e.g., iPod Touch), etc. |

| If you have a spare PC around and two NICs to create a router, set up the PC to run for a few weeks to see what your usage is like and to let it log your usage. It'll be more flexible besides having to pay a little extra on the electric bill to run the PC (I leave my gaming machine on 24/7. Never is shut down, but is rebooted once every few weeks). |

Nah, I prefer not to have a dedicated computer to do that. That is why I use a dedicated hardware router to avoid power usage, heat (gets hot in my room during heat waves like 85+ degrees(F)), etc. |

| That is understandable, but hey, you have to do with what works best with you.
On the topic of heat, if you've seen my computer specs, you'd know that when I'm stressing the box it acts as a space heater. Trust me, during the summer months I need to adjust my central air to send more cool air into the room where the PC is at because of the amount of heat it makes (mainly the 3 video cards in it. GTX280s run very warm when maxed!). |

| I have a Linksys WRT54Gv8 running DD-WRT and it does a good job recording usage
February 2009 (Incoming: 23697 MB / Outgoing: 9273 MB) March 2009 (Incoming: 47447 MB / Outgoing: 8736 MB) April 2009 (Incoming: 6667 MB / Outgoing: 1409 MB)
it seems to hold the data with no problems after restarts I do see where it has 'data adminstration' with backup/restore/delete |

I heard/read TWC was going to roll out the "gas gauge" usage no matter what, which I think is a good idea. |

1 edit | reply to antdude Really if you want complete data on WAN bandwidth usage the only good option is a device that all your computers must go through to reach the internet: eg, your router or something placed in between either it and the modem or it and the rest of the LAN. Or, finally, an ISP-provided meter.
Another thing to consider: I got the bright idea once to measure my consumption on just my primary computer, sans-P2P (which was running on another computer ). Considering I regularly transfer large amounts of data around my LAN and use VNC to control my other PCs, I needed a meter that could differentiate between LAN and WAN traffic. I searched high and low for software bandwidth meters that could. I found no free ones. Not a single one. -- The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon profitable cause... |

My router tracks WAN Tx packets and Rx packets. Shouldn't this provide usage info by multiplying by 1000 or 1500 bytes per packet? |
