2 edits | [WIN7] I've somehow unshared folders with myself
[See subsequent posts - I've managed to deny myself permission to the files on my own HD, while granting them to others on my LAN....need to fix this!]
I run Win7. I wanted to share a folder with someone on a Vista computer.
We're on the same router in the same house.
I see that Win7 has Homegroups but that you need to be on Win7 to use them.
How can I share a folder with a Vista user?

If homegroup is already enabled turn it off then select "Change Advanced Settings" and setup sharing. |

2 edits | reply to aguen bigger problem just happened... it seems on my own Win7 computer i don't have permission to access my own pictures now. the folder shows up as "empty" but it is apparently a permisssions issue. I am the only user on this account and am an administrator (so it doesn't really make sense).
I had started up homegroup and then turned it off as suggested above. I also had gone into WMP and opened up all permissions for others to see/share (with read access only).
the other person on my network can now see all the pictures over the lan but i cannot see any of them...either in windows explorer, wmp, or picasa app.
fortunately this is a dual boot with Win7 x2 and all the data files are on a 3rd data partition. the other Win7 boot allows me to see all the photos.
so now i need to repair my permissions in windows....how do i do this? |

Help. In a nutshell, • I'm unable to see a folder that I tried successfully to share with others on my network. • The folder exists but shows up "empty" in my main Win7 OS because my Administrator account login (the only account on the OS) lacks the correct permissions. • It's on a separate data partition that is not part of either Win7 partition installed on this dual-boot pc. • When I boot my other Win7 OS I can browse the folder (thousands of photos) with no problem. I don't really use this 2nd install much, but it's useful in this context. How it got this way is described in earlier posts.
How do I reset all permissions for this folder (library?) in Win7 if I don't have permission? Should I boot into my other Win7 Install and change it from there? -- YOU can help reduce poverty, sustainably. »www.kiva.org/lender/kenandart

It took several minutes to process all the subfolders and files.
I'd warn anyone to see what happened earlier (started and left Homegroup, etc.) to avoid this kind of issue. |
