What exactly *is* an OLT?

Most people don't pay attention to what goes on behind the curtain, so to speak, at least until there's trouble of some sort. Then, most of the time the questions are in the category of "how do I make it stop doing this?"

An anonymous FAQ feedback question asked for more details in »Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »What is OLT: Optical Line Terminal?

Can anyone answer the request?

An OLT, in a nutsell, is where the PON cards reside. The OLT's also contain the CPU and the GWR and VGW uplink cards. Each OLT can have a few or many dozens of PON cards.

PON = Passive Optical Network

GWR = Gateway Router

VGW = Voice Gateway

Each OLT vendor has different models and configurations, depending on the technology and the end-user.

Ok, you're describing the CO equipment. Each PON card is feeding data to a group of subscribers, number depends on whether BPON or GPON. Gateway router is the first hop that's outside my wide area network router. IOW my WAN IP with a .1 as the last octet.

Voice Gateway takes my POTS traffic and directs it to the voice telephone system.

Is the PON card responsible for generating the three laser signals, or is the video signal imposed in a hub?

The PON card just transmits 1490nm - the video 'signal' (1550nm) is injected into the same feeder fiber in the CO. The ONT's transmit back to the PON cards at 1310nm.

Thanks to everyone for your replies.

The wikipedia link was very helpful, and the Alcatel brochure showed the signal layout and components nicely. I understand the components a little better.

I have updated the FAQ, but couldn't have done so without your help.

Ok, I'll bite.

What's the problem, how do you know it's an OLT fault and not something downstream, and who did you speak to about it?
