 | Att toying with caps? why do i not see more about it here. Im suppressed I dont see more people posting about the caps Att is testing in Reno. Sure their was a thread back in November, but it seems quiet, Now when roadrunner, and Comcast proposed caps, they got lots more media attention. ----------------------------------------------------------
Why on earth would I need more than 150gb per month?
I watch Hulu and Netflicks online, I have a slingbox that I watch quite a bit when not at home, I download large os files (win 7 beta), I upload HD video files to youtube, and vimeo, and I backup my important videos and photos to online backup services, So I dont do all of this in one month, but I see this 150gb cap being painfully low, if ever imposed.
I really hope that people take the time to let Att know that this is 100% wrong.
-----------------------------
How come their TV service usage is not capped? It uses the same link, the same link that supposedly the only reason we have caps is so everyone gets fair access. (correct me if im wrong) What if I dont watch TV as much as im on the internet?
---------------------------------
Someone leaving their TV on an HD TV channel for 5 hours per day uses 14GB a day, Thus using 420 GB a month, and if they have another TV in the house, or another dvr, they could easily use more than 1TB a month.
If att told you that you could only watch HD tv for a total of 34 hours per month, Im sure you would never buy Uverse TV.
If a cap is imposed its only fair that TV usage be included.
------------------------------ How long would it take to use that entire cap up if I was downloading at full speed?
18 mbps = 2.25mBps per second
135 megabytes per min
8100 megabytes or 8.1 GB per hour
192 GB per day,
Whoa I just went over my cap in one day!!
----------------------------
This proposed cap is making it so we would only get served 1/30th the amount we could be getting.
-----------------------------
I would assume That If im purchasing the most expensive service that att has to offer and it was specifically advertise to me that I could download movies with this service, I would feel jipped.
Downloading Movies Streaming Video / Video Conferencing

3 edits | I really do not believe they are going to try this across the entire country, but if they do I am going to Comcast.
I will keep Uverse TV though. This is not Canada or Australia where their Internet customers are taken advantage of and they are charged high rates.
The reason why you do not see much about it here when it is mentioned, is no one really responds to the topic.
Perhaps everyone is asleep or they just do not care. |
|
 | Doesnt Comcast impose a 200gb limit? (yea it is 50gb more)
I guess people wont complain about this until they get the bill wit the $200 charge for more gigs,
Its just the big telcos milking us for more moola, so sick of it.
Att Spent alot of $ to make a nice new network, only to rope it off and let it only be used by services that let them make cash.
Im surprised I sound like the unhappy customer here, (and I havent even gotten the service yet, Should I not be upset or something?)
Remember when a few dial up isp's decided to limit your monthly use by # of hours? Remember how many people left them? I sure did.
Its obvious that its not a network bottleneck think, its a "were milking you for cash" Again if it was they would have to cap tv use also. |
|
 | Comcast has a 250 gb limit. |
|
 | reply to doublea I canceled my Uverse when they started testing the caps here in the Reno area. Our only other alternative in Reno is Charter who also just announced a new caps policy. We are now a city with no uncapped alternatives! |

tribal join:2002-11-28 Garden Grove, CA | reply to doublea I was under the impression that the testing caps was for ADSL only. Not U-Verse. |
|
 | reply to Reno Blues their is always dial up, :P but i dont think you could pull 150gb in a year through a dial up line, but it is uncapped.
You dont have any local small tellcos? I have 2 dsl companies here that will never have caps, because they dont offer tv, and have no encouragement to do so.
Glad to hear someone takes this seriously. |
|
 | reply to tribal Why do they have a cap listed for the 18mpbs and 10mbps uverse only services?
150GB....
they are testing it for uverse. |

1 edit | reply to doublea i doubt your see at&t expand there caps they may ditch caps altogether soon
afterall here in my area charter offers 20 meg internet for 250 gigbyte cap which is bigger then at&t proposed caps
at&t does not offer uverse here yet but if they offer uverse 18 meg with no cap it would trump charter in my view and id get it in a minute but if they had caps on it id just keep charter
only advantage uverse has is its not capped in most areas otherwize cable wins hands down |

Our comcast (cable) here does not offer anything over 8mbps here with speed boost up to 20mbps. Which is a worthless gimic anyway. I can see why cable does limits, it has a limited bandwidth it can hand out to an area, cable is flawed in this design, as to att's uverse network they shouldent have issues. |

2 edits | reply to doublea well in terms of speed charter is rolling out 60 meg tiers with no caps
in terms of bandwidth coax is a lot better then normal phone wire
at&t best they can offer in terms of internet speed would be 50 meg that would require them to give up offering any cable channels and youed have to be close to the vrad |
|
 | I wish comcast would get its act together, they seem to be sitting around here, Allowing uverse to be the best service in our area right now.
I know know coax is better for data, but you have to share a single coax among many other users on the cable network.
on docsis 3 you are sharing a 171mbps connection with ~10-50 other users.
With att your connection from the vrad to your house is your own, never having to worry about being squeezed off your own line. Sure it is a slower link 25mbps, but its your own.
It is though for ATT it looks like VDSL is only going to last them about 5 years, and is alredy outdated by docsis3 (somewhat)
The only way telcos were sucessfull in selling dsl where cable has faster service is to offer it at a chaper price. It looks like now the deciding factor will be whom caps or not. |

zed260Premium join:2007-09-30 Cleveland, TN kudos:1 | reply to doublea at&t will probably go fiber to the home 100 percent before to long |
|
 | I dont see att getting away with tearing up all the roads, and putting fiber down in some of the 100 year old neighbor hoods around here. Nor investing that kind of $$$
Also even worse for me, I live in a town home complex. Our complex just invested over $1,000,000 from reserves into repaving all of our roads. Were not going to be happy to see att tearing that up.
What I dont get is that they didnt have to tear up all the roads leading to the vrads, was the fiber alredy in place? Or are their underground tunnles that allow them to string the fiber that way? |
|
zed260Premium join:2007-09-30 Cleveland, TN kudos:1 | reply to doublea i belive they can easily tunnel in underground they have machines for that
as far as fiber goes it does not always have to be underground cable runs fiber on poles till it reaches the point where they branch it off into coax |
|
 | If its underground does the cable form your nid to the vrad run all that distance unspliced? or does it swap several times into larger copper groups? |
|
zed260Premium join:2007-09-30 Cleveland, TN kudos:1 | reply to doublea i dont have uverse in my area yet
but as best i know from reading about it i assume its ran unsliced most if not all the way to the vrad
i know at&t was running fiber along the interstate here recently |

| reply to doublea The AT&T Reno cap trials started 4 or 5 months ago and the Beaumont addition shortly after that. There was a lot of discussion at the time but it tapered off. There doesn't seem to be a lot of BBR users from those areas on this forum. Time Warner's Beaumont cap also seemed to gather very few responses from actual impacted customers.
AT&T's proposed caps are significantly smaller if you choose Elite, Pro or Standard. That could be a major problem for DSL customers who need to transfer lots of data but don't qualify for higher tiers! Comcast offers 250GB on their STANDARD tier.
AT&T may have decided to wait and see what happens with TWC before going forward. -- AT&T U-Hearse Your funeral. Delivered.
