| 10GB "cap" now enforced
Just got a lovely email from Millenicom with rather contradicting words in the email. I have usage spread out over 3 computers so software updates, windows updates, iPod downloads, HD streaming videos etc. all add up pretty quick. What gets me is they FORCE you to agree to their limit or cancel your account. Period. To me that means YOU HAVE A CAP! Don't say you don't have a cap then enforce a limit or threaten to cancel a persons account.
quote: Our upstream carriers request usage in the 5 gigabyte or less range. As stated, we do not impose a cap however please note in the most recent billing period your usage was between:
[My Usage]
This amount of data usage threatens our contract and thus our ability to maintain mobile broadband service for everyone else.
Please reply to this email and let us know if you believe you can reduce your usage to closer to (at least) the 10G range. If not, we need you to return your device in the original case with the original contents to the address below before the end of the month so we can close your account.

| They said in the email between 40-50GB of usage last billing period of course which isn't a typical months usage for me, more around 5-10GB total for a month for all 3 computers.
I just had to reinstall Windows XP on one of my computers and download everything again plus patches, updates etc. which is what probably pushed it this month. Not to mention games I play which I had to download patches for which some patches alone are close to 1GB just for 1, which I can't help But from the tone in the email I get that if you push over the 10Gb range (I'd say they probably give you up to 15GB but not sure) you'll be getting an email like that.
Let me just get a chance to get my anti-flame outfit on before everyone flames me for using too much bandwidth 1 time out of almost 2 years I've been with Millenicom. |

| reply to cooljay Hrm, I really find this disturbing, but expected at the same time. At least, for now, they're allowing more than what you'd get going through Sprint or Verizon.
I've downloaded at least 8GB in the past few days, and I'm sure I'm over 10GB for this month now. That's not typical usage for me, but I downloaded a beta of a game. I usually stay under 10GB a month, and I'm positive I've not exceeded 15 since being with them. Haven't received an email from them yet so I'll wait and see. -- Windows XP Pro SP3 / Windows 7 Beta Build 7000|AMD Phenom X3 8650|Asus M3N72-D Motherboard|4GB Patriot PC2-8500 1066MHz RAM|2x GeForce 7950 GT 512MB| |

| reply to cooljay I never cease to be amazed the lack of comprehension some people have to stated terms of use. By accepting the service the user "agrees" to the terms. In this case limiting use of bandwidth to certain levels. In Millenicom's case their recent emails suggest to "try to hold it less than 10G. That should not be hard for anyone to do and is a heck of a lot better than a hard 5G cap.
Excuses such as downloading multiple patches, etc are meaningless to the upstream providers. They see bandwidth usage only.
Heavy users are just going to force hard limits on all of us and for the actions of a few who cannot seem to restrain themselves all will pay the penalty. |

Jack, though I agree with the general point you're trying to get across, possibly you should try to not come across as a bandwidth cop and people will be more open to what you're saying.
Regarding your point about some people having a "lack of comprehension"...I can totally understand why some folks might not have a clear understanding as to what is meant by "unlimited". At this point, Millenicom is now drawing the line for heavy users, no need for you to jump on the soapbox and make disparaging remarks about the amount of bandwidth someone has used. |

Thanks! That's a good question...Based on posts in the Sprint forum and the Millenicom forum, it looks like emails have been received by both Verizon and Sprint users. |

| reply to mooch Jack_in_VA has said it very well. "Heavy users are just going to force hard limits on all of us and for the actions of a few who cannot seem to restrain themselves all will pay the penalty." Jack the bandwidth cop, I think not, he just wants to keep a hard 5gb cap from being enforced on all users. I have two Windows boxes, one Unix box plus a laptop that receive updates and patches. They are used by my family for email and general web surfing. My total usage for the month is now at 2.5gb. The thing everyone needs to realize is EVDO is not a replacement for cable or DSL. EVDO does not scale up well when many users load it down with streaming video and huge downloads of video files. WiMax and LTE hopefully will have the capacity to provide the fat pipe that is required to support multiple uses with heavy usage. |

Oops, never mind what I said there. The person who posted in the Sprint forum that they received the email just did a follow up post to say they'd recently switched to Verizon.
Any Sprint users getting the email? |

That's not the way to get a point across to anyone, especially when you consider that the "stated terms of use" are not clear. |

| reply to Jack_in_VA I have no problem keeping it within the 10Gb ballpark figure and think those using 50-100Gb+ a month all the time should be on notice.
But when a provider claims "unlimited" with no cap, well then it should be just that. If they want to keep their upstream providers happy then don't claim "unlimited" but start saying 10-20Gb usage a month only this would also keep all the heavy bandwidth users away. They really don't give you any other option other than to turn in your equipment and cancel your account, so "unlimited" it is not. |
