If so, is there any way to verify that the DSL is actually reaching the modem or is it possible they are just trying to force me to purchase their equipment?

anon : My ISP provider of DSL originally indicated that it would be fine for me to use the Speedstream modem to avoid purchase of their equipment. I thought the e-mails and documentation they spoke of sending (and never have) would include basic or standard settings. Now they are telling me they will not volunteer any set-up information for "third party equipment". They did finally verify that a username and password are required. Replacing the previous login info (which did work for a former ISP) with this new info has not worked. Are there other settings which I need to ask for specifically from the ISP? Any pointers would be a great help here!
